SELENIUM - LoveToKnow Article on SELENIUM
It is occasionally found in the native condition, but more frequently in I combination with metals in the form of selenides, the more important seleniferous minerals being euchairite, crookesite, clausthalite, naumannite and zorgite.
It combines directly with nitrogen, phosphorus, antimony and carbon, and with all the metals (except gold) to form selenides, of which those of the alkali and alkaline earth metals are soluble in water.
Nitrogen selenide, N~Se2, is formed by the decomposition of selenium chloride with ammonia (A. Verneuil, Bull.

Aminoalkyl phenyl selenides for the treatment of hypertension and nervous system dysfunctions - Patent 4722940
The preparation of aminoalkyl phenyl selenides and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof is disclosed which are useful for the treatment of hypertension and related vascular diseases and the treatment of nervous system dysfunctions.
In treating hypertension in mammals by the method of this invention, it may not be necessary to administer the aminoalkyl phenyl selenide in combination with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, which would have the effect of prolonging life of the active compounds in the body.
Using the standard substrate 2-phenylethylamine, the carbon analog 3-phenylpropylamine and the substrate phenyl-2-aminoethyl selenide of this invention with ascorbic acid as the electron donor, the values of k.sub.cat, and k.sub.cat /K.sub.m using 300 micrograms per milliliter of catalase were 48s.sup.-1 and 2.9.times.10.sup.3 M.sup.-1.sub.s.sup.-1, respectively.

Phase relations among selenides, tellurides, and oxides; II, Applications to selenide-bearing ore deposits -- Simon et ...
The stability fields of binary selenide minerals calculated thermodynamically relative to native elements, sulfide, telluride, and oxide minerals as a function of temperature have been used to characterize the genesis of selenide-bearing deposits.
The actual mineralogy and the amount of selenide minerals that form from such an oxidizing fluid is a function of f (sub Se2(g)) and ultimately reflects the concentration of selenium in the fluid.
A selenium-rich fluid alone can account for the presence of silver selenides in epithermal Au-Ag deposits, but both an oxidizing and a selenium-rich fluid is required to form the selenide mineral assemblages observed in telethermal selenide vein, unconformity-related, and sandstone-hosted uranium deposits.

Phenylaminoalkyl selenides were developed in the authors' laboratories as novel, selenium?based pharmacological agents.
Biochemical studies established that as a consequence of the redox properties of their selenium moieties, these phenylaminoalkyl selenides possessed the remarkable property of propagating a cycle of turnover?dependent local depletion of reduced ascorbate when processed by the key enzyme of catecholamine metabolism, dopamine?beta?monooxygenase.
On the basis of inductively coupled plasma/mass spectroscopic analyses, corroborated by operant behaviour and locomotor activity investigations, an orally?active phenylaminoalkyl selenide with restricted CNS permeability was successfully developed.

This invention relates to solid sulfides and selenides, and more particularly to such compounds containing one or more rare earth element and hafnium or zirconium.
Ternary sulfides and selenides of the rare earths have been known for both the lanthanide and actinide series.
Thus, the sulfides and selenides on the one hand, and the lanthanide and actinide rare earths on the other may be substituted for each other up to about ten percent, and such variations should be allowed within the scope of specific formulae.

Rhodobacter sphaeroides 2.4.1 is a naturally occurring bacterium that has been shown to be resistant to considerable concentrations of metalloid oxyanions and to convert selenium oxyanions into methyl selenides when grown under anaerobic conditions in the presence of incandescent light.
Capillary gas chromatography coupled with fluorine-induced chemiluminescence detection was used to study the release of methyl selenides and methyl sulfides by Rhodobacter sphaeroides over the course of time, at varied pH, and at varied selenium oxyanion concentrations.
However, the highest yields of reduced selenium found in dimethyl selenide and dimethyl diselenide per amount of selenium oxyanion added were found in cultures amended with 2 mM selenate and selenite.

 Berzelian Classification System
The antimonides, arsenides, selenides, and tellurides closely resemble the sulfides in composition, while the chromates, molybdates and tungstates resemble the sulfates.
In this case the mineral is classified as an antimonide, arsenide, selenide, or telluride.
The sulfides, antimonides, arsenides, selenides, tellurides, and sulfosalts may be grouped according to the ratio of metal to nonmetal contained in their chemical formulae.

As a consequence, the rate of Se incorporation into food webs or its role as either a limiting nutrient or a toxic substance is a function of complex biogeochemistry.
In particular, little is understood about the accumulation of dissolved organic selenides by phyto- or bacterioplankton.
Consequently, uptake of organic selenides by phytoplankton may need to be considered in models predicting Se incorporation into aquatic food webs, given that it is a significant fraction of dissolved Se in estuarine and oceanic waters.
