Self (philosophy) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In philosophy, the self is the idea of a unified being which is the source of an idiosyncratic consciousness.
Moreover, this self is the agent responsible for the thoughts and actions of an individual to which they are ascribed.
The particular characteristics of the self determine its identity.

The self is a key construct in several schools of psychology.
A psychological school of thought focused on the self was originally proposed by Heinz Kohut (1913-1981).
Edward E. Sampson (1989) argues that the preoccupation with independence is harmful in that it creates racial, sexual and national divides and does not allow for observation of the self-in-other and other-in-self.

George Herbert Mead [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
His theory of "mind, self, and society" is, in effect, a philosophy of the act from the standpoint of a social process involving the interaction of many individuals, just as his theory of knowledge and value is a philosophy of the act from the standpoint of the experiencing individual in interaction with an environment.
The self, then, is of great value to organized society: the internalization of the conversation of significant symbols and of other interactional symbolic structures allows for "the superior co-ordination" of "society as a whole," and for the "increased efficiency of the individual as a member of the group" (Mind, Self and Society 179).
This interpretation of self- consciousness, which is the essence of Mead's theory of the self, has its roots in the Romantic analysis of the relation between self and not-self.

 Philosophy
A philosopher confidently ensconced in one or another ongoing living enterprise in the philosophy of science (even one that appears entirely ahistorical) still needs to connect his or her enterprise with philosophical projects of the past, and that requires work in the history of philosophy of science.
and the journal Philosophy of Science, Howard identifies the lack of a "successor paradigm" to logical empiricism and, ultimately, the "loss of the sense of a cultural, social, and political mission" that philosophy of science ought to have as the chief causes of the discipline's political disengagement.
For, traditionally construed, philosophy can be taken to consist in a core of great controversies over fundamental questions, together with numerous branches of "applied" philosophy (e.g., biomedical ethics, environmental ethics, and philosophy of law), where the elements of a general theory are analyzed more narrowly in connection with specific uses or contexts.

First we must take care to realize that the area we are delving into is but one aspect of philosophy, known as metaphysics, or the quest for the nature of reality as it pertains to the universe and and the universal person and their process of development and structure in regards to that.
Reductive materialism is the technical name for the theory that the self is coextensive with the physical being; the view that the self is explicable in terms of the mind or spirit is called panpsychism.
To say that self is the “persistent pattern” then forces us to step back and think abstractly ie view the larger picture and see how the ‘persistent pattern’ interacts with other ‘persistent patterns’ and also how the loss of a ‘persistant pattern’ will damage the overall design.

Sections 4 and 5 briefly describe two special topics in the philosophy of self-knowledge, respectively: the problem of self-deception, and the consequences of epistemically distinctive self-knowledge for the doctrine of content externalism.
This approach is exemplified by the claim (Freud 1923) that the unconscious may mislead the conscious self in an effort to shield it from awareness of painful facts.

 The Value of Philosophy
Philosophy and the sciences were one at the beginning of Western culture but that unity fell apart for the benefit of scientific progress.
Philosophy can keep spurring human mind to new intellectual adventures against any kind of dogmatism and prejudices precisely because it is not bound to any set of doctrines and the demand to abide by accepted beliefs and customs.
Philosophy releases from the "prejudices derived from common sense", from the "habitual belief of an age or nation", and from convictions that have grown up "without the cooperation or consent of (our) deliberate reason".

Philosophy has thus also often been misanthropic, or at least skeptical of the wisdom of the crowd.

 On The Self - Philosophy
Throughout the history of philosophy there have been many ideas about what the nature of the self is. From the moralistic idealism of Christian ascetics to the modern movement toward materialism these concepts of self have typically been polarized between mind and body.
Because the brain is integral to the function of the self as we know it a material element of self is necessary.
The fact that there are both material and immaterial elements of the self also firmly establishes that the self is a continuum.

The Purpose and Philosophy of Self-Expression with Accountability
Consequently, the self is assumed to be at war with itself and the ability to control its inferior side is considered a sign of strength and an expression of self-control.
The self's paradoxical capacities and traits, needs and desires are therefore traditionally relegated to the following order: intellect is considered superior to emotions and should control them, literal external reality is seen as superior to metaphorical intuitive inner reality and should be in control of the self's perception.

Divine Action Topic: Kerr, Fergus. “The Modern Philosophy of Self in Recent Theology."
It is ironic that the modern philosophical conception of the self sprang, as Kerr notes, from explicitly theological concerns.
In the process of demonstrating the existence of God and the immortality of the soul, Descartes articulated a conception of human nature according to which the self is essentially a thinking thing, thus redefining what it is to be human in terms of consciousness.
Time and again, however, the paradigm of the self turns out to have remarkably divine attributes.” The philosophy of the self that possesses so many modern theologians is a view which philosophers today are working hard to destroy.

Gewirth begins by distinguishing two models of self- fulfillment - aspiration-fulfillment and capacity-fulfillment - and shows how each of these contributes to the intrinsic value of human life.
Gewirth also argues that self-fulfillment has a social as well as an individual dimension: that the nature of society and the obstacles that disadvantaged groups face affect strongly the character of the self-fulfillment that persons can achieve.
Bold in scope and rigorous in execution, "Self-Fulfillment" is a powerful new contribution to moral, social, and political philosophy.

Traditional scholars of philosophy and religion, both East and West, often place a major emphasis on analyzing the nature of "the self." In recent decades, there has been a renewed interest in analyzing self, but most scholars have not claimed knowledge of an ahistorical, objective, essential self free from all cultural determinants.
The contributors to this volume recognize the need to contextualize specific views of self and to analyze such views in terms of the dynamic, dialectical relations between self and culture.
