Topic: Self belay

What is a self belayed rappel?
He was using the fireman's belay at the bottom of the traditional rappel to the north saddle off Oregon's Mt. Washington.
If you are doing a dulfersitz rappel, self belay with a swami runner or a diaper runner, a locking biner and your self-belay prussic.
Stated again: With the belay device extended, attach a prussic loop to the tail of the rappel rope and then to your harness leg loop with a locking carabiner

Needle Sports Belay, Abseil & Ascent
Most Belay Devices can safely be used to abseil with in most situations (be aware that they heat up more quickly than a large figure of eight descender).
Self Belaying: Some ascenders can also be used to protect a solo climber who is climbing along side a fixed rope, and some can be used to back up an abseil.
It is also worth using a karabiner that ensures the pull is along the axis (such as the DMM Belay Master) to stop cross-loading, though Petzl say that it is essential to use an oval karabiner with a Mini Traxion.

 Belaying - OZultimate.com canyoning
In one canyon that I've been on, the leader didn't insist on belaying, even though a number of the party were inexperienced abseilers.
The hardest situation to decide on a self belay is when the abseil has a tricky start.
Often the self belay can get caught on edges, or you would prefer to use your left hand for something other than moving the prusik knot.

The Petzl Basic is a versatile rope grab used as an anti-slip device in a hauling system, rope climb or self belaying on a fixed rope.
This highly effective self trailing rope grab grips automatically in the event of a fall and dissipates the energy of the fall by slipping along the rope.

Where are the photos of the self belay grasp and the self arrest grasp?
Your instruction and suggestions were indispensable; we used a running belay above the Bergschrund (the 'shrund is huge, right now), we used your roping suggestions, and Scott had to self-belay at one point, which was automatic after our practicing.
