Self-propelled artillery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Self-propelled artillery (also called mobile artilley or locomotive artillery) vehicles mount a large howitzer (or alternatively mortar or rockets) and are used for long-range indirect bombardment support.
Though most modern self-propelled artillery superficially resemble tanks, being lightly armored and sometimes equipped with machine guns, they are not designed for direct-fire combat unlike main battle tanks.
Modern SP artillery is highly digitized with the ability to self survey firing positions using systems such as GPS and inertial navigation systems.

The 2S19 self-propelled artillery system is based on the chassis of the T-80 MBT but with automotive components of the T-72 MBT as the 2S19 has a distinct exhaust outlet on the left side that is not on the T-80 which is powered by a gas-turbine engine.
The former Soviet Army is now known to refer to these vehicles as the 1V12 system which applies to those command and control vehicles assigned to self-propelled artillery systems.
The ACRV 1V119 is the airborne equivalent to the 1V12 and 1V17-series of artillery command and reconnaissance vehicles.

 203-mm Self-propelled Artillery Gun 2S7 "Pion"
Initial researches in connection with development of 203-mm self-propelled artillery gun capable of firing in 25 kilometer range began in Soviet Union in the December of 1967.
In the March of 1970 there were enumerated tactical-technical characteristics for such artillery gun's development and in the late 70-ties first serial 2S7 "Pion" Self-Propelled Artillery Guns were provided for Soviet Union special extremely powerful artillery brigades.
Considering that preparing for the march position time is set to minimum, artillery unit in principle is able to fire 1-2 rounds and leave it's position while the first round will defeat target in 47 kilometers range.

 Artillery
Many of the larger self-propelled artillery systems entering, or about to enter, the inventories of a number of western armies are considered outsized loads in terms of airlift requirements.
Systems such as the AS90 and PzH 2000 represent the backbone of the tube artillery arm and the expected introduction of the XM2001 Crusader self-propelled Howitzer (SPH) into US service around 2004/05 will continue this evolution.
While it is likely that the artillery community will utilise cargo rounds containing simple cluster munitions, smart weapons will evolve in order to engage the most difficult of battlefield targets manoeuvring or heavily camouflaged armoured vehicles.

Battlefront - Producers of fine metal and resin miniatures
Another reason was that self-propelled artillery used in an indirect fire role was considered pointless, as the time required to set up and prepare the firing position and communications negated the speed at which self-propelled guns could get into position.
And lighter guns were expected to do much of their artillery preparation by direct fire, so no need was seen for an additional self-propelled artillery arm to do this job.
It was decided that the Red Army needed it’s own self-propelled artillery pieces, and one was to be built on the hull of the T-70 light tank (the SU-76), and another on the hull of the T-34 medium tank (the SU-122).

Self-targeting, surveillance and tracking of sea and ground targets, as well as automatic fire control of artillery mounts, can be performed via fire control system of the central station, from one of the two observation posts and a helicopter providing the direction of fire.
Being unique in design, this artillery system combines fire power means, the central control station and reconnaissance facilities, and the combat support system mounted at the minimum number of combat vehicles.
Additionally, the artillery mounts can deliver decentralised fire (without control of the central station) using the target data supplied from the optical electromechanical sights, command and control posts and target acquisition equipment, ballistic computers and laser range finders.

 Star Wars Artillery
The most well-known self-propelled gun in the canon films is the SPHA-T (self-propelled heavy artillery turbolaser) in AOTC.
However, it is noteworthy that the two self-propelled guns known to exist are both heavily armoured and shielded repulsorlift platforms, which obviously use altitude in order to compensate for the limitations of "line of sight" targeting.
The role of artillery in Star Wars is similar to the role of artillery in real life, with mortars for close and medium range infantry support, and field artillery for long-range strikes.

Juno Beach Centre - Self-Propelled Artillery
The self-propelled artillery piece (SP), marrying the fire-power of the field gun to the mobility of the tank, first appeared during the Great War and was developed further during the inter-war years.
Royal Artillery doctrine since the First World War was governed by adherence to the principle of concentration of fire-power.
The British SP field gun was not designed for firing on the move and was not armed with machine-guns, so it could not defend itself against enemy infantry.

As a piece of static siege artillery there was no question of its effect, but even its creators, Krupp, admitted while it was a valuable research tool, as a practical weapon of war it was useless.
While having no on-board stowage of 80cm rounds is not an issue for SP artillery, it would be an absolute must for a 'tank'.

The dominance of the US in the field of self-propelled artillery systems started to decline some years ago as new contractors entered the arena and an increasing number of countries supplemented their self-propelled artillery systems with artillery rocket systems.
In the past there have been attempts to develop self-propelled artillery systems on a collaborative basis, most notably the German/Italian/UK 155 mm SP-70, which was cancelled as far back as 1986 for a variety of technical and operational reasons.
Artillery rocket systems had been deployed by Russia for many years, but it was only in 1983 that the US started to field what is now the Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control 227 mm Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS).
