Self-esteem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The research on egocentrism and ethnocentrism that informed discussion of human growth and development in the mid-20th century is ignored; indeed, the terms themselves are considered politically incorrect.
The language most in favor is that which exalts the self — self-expression, self-assertion, self-indulgence, self-realization, self-approval, self-acceptance, self-love, and the ubiquitous self-esteem — (Ruggiero, 2000).
Psychologists who agree with this view dismiss Baumeister's findings and say that what he mistakes as 'high self esteem' in criminals is in fact narcissism and because it is an inflated opinion of self that is built on the shaky ground and the violence comes when that opinion is threatened.

Self-Respect and Identity   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
It is possible to have respect or lack of respect for identities, but one can truly have nothing but respect for people in their essence.
Well, again, respect for self can mean respect for oneself as a person (unconditional positive regard for self), but it usually means respect for oneself as an identity.
If there were such a "higher self", it would have to be a very general form of identity, ruled by a very general kind of intention, the highest-level intention a person can have.

 Respect
But this deference is not erasure of the self, for respect is at the same time an expression of agency: it is deliberate, a matter of directed rather than grabbed attention, of reflective consideration and willingness to obey, and we are free to refuse to heed the call.
Similarly, the phrase “respecting someone as a person” might refer to appraising her as overall a morally good person, or to acknowledging her standing as an equal in the moral community, or to attending to her as the particular person she is as opposed to treating her like just another body.
Respect for persons is one of the basic tenets of liberal democratic societies, which are founded on the ideal of the equal dignity of all citizens and which realize this ideal in the equalization of rights and entitlements among all citizens and so the rejection of discrimination and differential treatment.

ZetaTalk: Self Respect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Self respect is the forerunner of respect for others, and in this regard respect for one's parents and origin is important.
Unless one views the self as worthwhile, with potential, deserving of admiration and concern and on an equal footing overall with others, one cannot truly give the same treatment to others.
Consciousness begins this way, but as the others in the vicinity are also young and struggling, self respect or viewing the self to be as worthy as others is rather natural.

self-respect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
We can talk about self-respect, about respect for others, no matter who they are (friends, relatives, teachers, young or old people, rich or poor), the respect for our traditions and customs, for nature and animals, for our own opinions and feelings and for the others.
Unlike other values that we have received at our birth, the respect develops in time, grows at the same time with us and it also depends a lot on the education we were given.

I’ve titled this piece Self Respect (is greater than) Self Esteem, because I feel that a distinction needs to be made in how we have been and are being educated in our public schools and how that focus should make a shift to promote positive self-image through self-respect (not self-esteem).
Those Teens and even young children who have not been jaded by an over inflated self-esteem realize that there are others who are prettier, more handsome, taller, shorter, thinner, more muscular, etc. They know their own hearts and can see that all is not beautiful and lovely inside.
You see, self respect would not allow it, as I don’t think I could live with myself if I crossed that boundary.

 JESUS' CONCERN FOR OUR SELF﷓RESPECT
I LOOKED in the dictionary, hoping that there would be a definition of self‑respect which would make a useful distinction between the self‑respect on which we pride ourselves and its exaggerated forms that we dislike.
But the dictionary contented itself with the illuminating definition that self‑respect is respect for oneself, so that I was thrown on my own resources for a definition.
Rightly or wrongly, I conceive self‑respect to be belief in one's own worth‑worth to God and worth to man. It may, of course, abnormally develop until it becomes pride, conceit, or arrogance ; or it may be minimized, making a man slack, careless, and shabby in character as in dress.
