Diagnosis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Diagnosis (from the Greek words dia = by and gnosis = knowledge) is the process of identifying a disease by its signs, symptoms and results of various diagnostic procedures.
The history of medical diagnosis began in earnest from the enlightened days of Hippocrates in ancient Greece but is far from perfect despite the enormous bounty of information made available by medical research including the sequencing of the human genome.
The practice of diagnosis continues to be dominated by theories set down in the early 1900s.

This diagnosis is an uncommon one to be sure, but it does underlie the importance of finding out what is causing a problem rather than treating it empirically.

 Diagnosis of EPM
Diagnosis by clinical signs alone is difficult, because clinical signs are commonly indistinguishable from other causes of spinal ataxia, weakness and lameness, including cervical stenotic myelopathy, equine degenerative myelopathy, equine herpes virus myelitis and equine motor neuron disease.
In general, the PCR test is NOT valuable in the diagnosis of EPM (Fenger et al., in press, c).
There are several approaches to the diagnosis of EPM; (1) clinical signs, (2) response to treatment, and (3) analysis of cerebrospinal fluid for the presence of anti-S.

The diagnosis of lupus is usually made after a careful review of the patient's medical history, coupled with analysis of blood study results from both routine laboratory testing and some specialized tests related to immune system status.
An important fact to remember concerning the treatment for lupus is that the diagnosis does not indicate the particular therapy to be used.
The first principle in making a diagnosis of SLE is that the individual has clinical evidence of a multi-system disease (i.e.

Making the diagnosis of MS as quickly and accurately as possible is important for several reasons: People who are living with frightening and uncomfortable symptoms want and need to know the reason for their discomfort.
Still, the diagnosis of MS cannot be made solely on the basis of MRI.
If the MRI findings continue to be negative more than a year or two after the initial diagnosis is made, every effort should be made to identify another possible cause for the symptoms.

Diagnosis of chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS), also known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), is a time-consuming and difficult process which is generally arrived at by excluding other illnesses with similar symptoms and comparing a patient's symptoms with the 1994 International case definition.

 Diagnosis
The most basic element of diagnosis is the employment of data to develop a picture of what processes are operating in the atmosphere at a given moment.
By concentrating on diagnosis (as we have defined it), a forecaster can develop strategies for using objective guidance that allow the forecaster to maintain a scientific outlook while still remaining ignorant about the details of guidance.
Precisely because the data are not sufficient to perform an "objective" analysis on this scale, forecasters must accept the penalty of erroneous interpretations of the data by subjective diagnosis, as mentioned in D86a,b.

Consequently, the diagnosis is based on the occurrence of symptoms and signs that are compatible with the disease, the presence of certain features that are particularly characteristic (e.g., oral or genital ulcerations), elimination of other possible causes of the patient’s presentation, and - whenever possible - proof of vasculitis by biopsy of an involved organ.
Because it may take several months or even years for all the common symptoms to appear, the diagnosis may not be made for a long time and is often a retrospective diagnosis.
Although a positive pathergy test is helpful in the diagnosis of Behçet's disease, only a minority of Behçet's patients demonstrate the pathergy phenomenon (i.e., have positive tests).

Once a diagnosis of one of the interstitial lung diseases is made, often your doctor will want to attempt to determine if your disease is currently in an active stage (with a high risk of more scar formation in the immediate future) or a non-active stage (with much less risk of further scar formation).
But BAL differs from the biopsy techniques in that it does not give the kind of information needed to make a specific, definite diagnosis, but gives information regarding whether the disease (in which a diagnosis has already been made by one of the biopsy techniques) is active or not.
But because of the ease and safety of this test, and the fact that it may not involve hospitalization and does not require general anesthesia (being totally put to sleep), it is usually considered the best test to begin the diagnostic evaluation of a patient with interstitial lung disease.

HCMA :: Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association Diagnosis How is Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Diagnosed?
As a result, in some patients an echocardiogram may not be sufficient to confidently exclude a diagnosis of HCM and in that situation a cardiac MRI may be recommended.
Currently, the diagnosis of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is made by an ultrasound scan of the heart called an "echocardiogram" or ECHO.
In fact, recent studies have shown that a cardiac MRI may be better than an echocardiogram to reliably detect hypertrophy in areas such as the left ventricular anterolateral wall and apex.
