Reference - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In scholarship, a reference may be a citation of a text that has been used in the creation of a piece of work such as an essay, report, or oration.
In computer science, references are datatypes which refer to an object elsewhere in memory, and are used to construct a wide variety of data structures such as linked lists.
In semantics, reference is generally construed as the relation between nouns or pronouns and objects that are named by them.

 Reference
Reference is arguably the central notion in the philosophy of language, with close ties to the notions of meaning and truth.
Reference in a context is ‘content,’ that is, an expression's contribution to ‘what is said.’ Character is more like linguistic meaning than reference and is supposed (according to Kaplan) to account for cognitive significance.
Reference, construed as a relation between bits of language and bits of reality, is assumed to be a genuine, substantive relation worthy of philosophical scrutiny.

Reference (Java 2 Platform SE v1.4.2)
Reference provides a way of recording address information about objects which themselves are not directly bound to the naming/directory system.
The string consists of the class name to which this reference refers, and the string representation of each of its addresses.
This class represents a reference to an object that is found outside of the naming/directory system.

 PHP: References Explained - Manual
References in PHP are a means to access the same variable content by different names.
The result is that when you change a function to pass by reference, it will only become more efficient if, inside the function, the passed variable is having its data altered, in which case passing by reference causes your code to alter the data of the original copy.
Since references are more like hardlinks than pointers, it is not possible to change a reference to an object by using that same reference.

Reference counting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Reference counting is often known as a garbage collection algorithm where each object contains a count of the number of references to it held by other objects.
In computer science, reference counting is a technique of storing the number of references, pointers, or handles to a resource such as an object or block of memory.
Whenever a reference is destroyed or overwritten, the reference count of the object it references is decremented, and whenever one is created or copied, the reference count of the object it references is incremented.
