Selkirk Feature Page on Undiscovered Scotland
Selkirk is an attractive town extending from the hilltop location of its Market Place and High Street down steep slopes to the impressive old woollen mills and more modern industrial estates along the valley of the Ettrick Water.
The road still passes through the centre of the town, but the greater effort involved in navigating Hawick, a few miles to the south, and Galashiels, a few miles to the north, mean that despite its obvious attractions Selkirk leaves less of an impression on the motorist.
The textile industry sustained Selkirk for over a century before going into decline: and the signs of it can be seen in the fine stone mill buildings that have found or are still looking for alternative uses.

 Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online
In June 1811 agreements were signed by Selkirk and the HBC under which, in return for founding an agricultural settlement and some other considerations, he was to have some 116,000 square miles — an area five times the size of Scotland and much of it magnificent land — for 10 shillings.
In the end it may have harmed Selkirk more than the NWC since it revealed little that had not been well known, and officially overlooked, for a long time; but it did suggest a more active concern with the fur trade than was consistent with Selkirk’s professed aims as a disinterested colonizer.
Selkirk, roused to passionate anger, led his force straight to Fort William, risking a pitched battle, and in mid August arrested nine of the NWC partners after a preliminary hearing.

Cat Fanciers: Selkirk Rex: Cat Breed FAQ
The basis for the Selkirk Rex breed is a mutation that causes a curly coat.
Selkirks come in a rainbow of colors, including the "pointed" colors, as the original cat was carrying the pointed gene.
The Selkirk Rex is being selectively bred to a completely different look, much closer to that of the British Shorthair, but distinct from that cat as well, especially in the length of the legs.

Cats and Kittens Magazine Selkirk Rex Breed Profile
When Jeri Newman of Livingston, Montana, introduced the Selkirk rex to the world in the late 1980s, she explained that breed was the namesake of a mountain range in Wyoming, close to the town where the matriarch of these curly-haired cats had been born.
The Selkirk's renown as the first cat breed named after a mountain range was short lived, however, because some stickler for detail pointed out that the Selkirk range extends from northern Idaho into southeastern British Columbia.
The Selkirk rex, the third rex cat to appear on the North American show bench, is markedly different from the two rex breeds that preceded it - the Cornish rex and the Devon rex.

 The Real Robinson Crusoe
Selkirk, a skilled navigator, and the ship’s sickened crew were privateers—in effect, legalized pirates for the British Crown—who had spent a year at sea off South America robbing Spanish ships and coastal villages.
Selkirk demanded that his 21-year-old captain, Lt. Thomas Stradling, whom he regarded as arrogant, leave him on the largest island, a wish that Stradling was only too happy to oblige.
In any case, Selkirk was left ashore, but when he realized that none of the crew was joining him in the mutiny, he frantically waded back into the ocean and begged forgiveness from Stradling, a tyrant who delighted in saying no.

Alexander Selkirk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alexander Selkirk, born Alexander Selcraig, (1676–13 December 1721) was a Scottish sailor who spent four years as a castaway on an uninhabited island; it is probable that his travails provided the inspiration for Defoe's Robinson Crusoe.
Selkirk initially stayed on the beach, because he was afraid of sea creatures and was very paranoid about most aspects in his life.
Selkirk was discovered on the island by the Duke's Captain, Woodes Rogers, who called him the Governor of the island.
