Selkirk Rex - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Selkirk Rex is a breed of cat with highly curled hair, including the whiskers (vibrissae).
Unlike the Devon Rex and Cornish Rex, the hair is of normal length and not partly missing, and there are longhair[1] and shorthair[2] varieties.
The Selkirk Rex originated in America in 1987, with a cat named Miss DePesto, who was bred to a Persian, producing three Selkirk Rexes and three straight-haired cats.

Cats and Kittens Magazine Selkirk Rex Breed Profile   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
When Jeri Newman of Livingston, Montana, introduced the Selkirk rex to the world in the late 1980s, she explained that breed was the namesake of a mountain range in Wyoming, close to the town where the matriarch of these curly-haired cats had been born.
The Selkirk rex, the third rex cat to appear on the North American show bench, is markedly different from the two rex breeds that preceded it - the Cornish rex and the Devon rex.
Like any young, still-developing breed, the Selkirk rex exhibits the personality traits of it various components: a certain friskiness inherited from its free-roaming ancestors, tempered by the reserve that is the hallmark of its Persian and British shorthair relatives.

Thus the standard originally produced by Jeri to introduce the cat to CFA was meant to describe the "Brit" look she envisioned for the breed.
Rex was chosen because the cat was curly -indicating a change in coat type unlike the American Wirehair and closer to both the Cornish and Devon Rexes.
Other Rexes with curly coats have been found: The Oregon Rex (since died out, specifics of the coat unknown) and the German Rex (determined to be on the same gene locus as the Cornish).
