CP5935   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
On other North American railways, locomotives with the same 2-10-4 wheel arrangement were called "Texas-types." But CPR had held a contest among its employees to come up with a distinctly Canadian name, when the semi-streamlined 2--10-4 Tlb class locomotives were introduced in 1938.
Selkirk won the day and the prize was awarded to one of the employees in a random draw.
Selkirk locomotives were equipped with boosters - a geared steam engine attached to the locomotive's trailing truck that increased tractive effort and helped locomotives move heavier trains from a standing start.

 Selkirk Lodge
Selkirk is a royal burgh in the Scottish Borders, and historically the county town of Selkirkshire.
Selkirk initially stayed on the beach, fearing strange inland sounds he assumed to be dangerous beasts.
He outlived his son and heir and the titles created with the Earl of Ruglen was passed onto his daughter Anne Hamilton, 2nd Countess of Ruglen and through her marriage to the families of the Earl of March and the Duke of Queensberry.

From those same areas, cars are classified directly to Selkirk at other Conrail yards, and by other railroads from as far west as North Platte, Neb (over 1600 miles away), and moved without further switching to Selkirk for final classification and distribution to points in the east.
For the hump operation, a hump locomotive is positioned behind a train on a track in the receiving yard, as designated by the hump conductor, who then initiates the classification system by calling up from the computer the switch list for that receiving track.
The locomotive fuel, sand, lubrication and trip inspection facility is located near the east end of the receiving yard.

 Canadian Pacific Selkirk Locomotive #5917
The best thing about working on these large mountain locomotives was that they were all oil burners because of having to work through some of Canada's heavily forested national parks There was always the danger of fires being started from sparks that were frequently thrown out from the smoke stacks of coal burning engines.
Most of the steam from the main cylinders is exhausted up the stack to create a heavy draft for the fire, but part of it passes through the outside of this closed water heater to heat the feed water and be cooled and condensed.
Behind the "Selkirk" is a coal burning stoker fired 2300 series "Pacific" 2-6-2 which probably just came in from Medicine Hat, a hundred and seventy four miles east of Calgary.

One of the most revolutionary features of this locomotive is the truck design which greatly improves weight distribution to the axles and allows the front and rear axles of the truck to steer when in curves, reducing wheel flange wear and maximizing adhesion.
This allows the locomotive to provide up to 185,000 pounds of starting tractive effort and because of the design of the AC traction system, short time ratings are not a concern for the engineer.
Initial loading of the locomotive is slower than with DC locomotives and it is important to make sure the locomotive does not roll back when starting the train.

In the locomotive, the transmission is usually the main generator and its excitation system, with the final drive being the traction motors and gearing.
The road locomotive's cooling system is very similar except for a few refinements such as radiator shutters (which were featured on some of the early automobiles).

Railfans are concerned with diesel-powered locomotives, which they very reverently call "power." For instance, one might describe seeing a coal train with "CSX power" or an auto-rack train with "UP power." One would not refer to power independent of the railroad company to which it belongs.
Selkirk is the largest freight yard in the Northeast, the gateway for eastbound trains to New England and New York.
Today Selkirk draws railfans in from all over the Northeast; many leave home in the middle of the night to reach the yard at dawn to ingest trains till sunset.

Modifications led the T 1b to be ten tons or tonnes lighter while increasing steam pressure from 275 to 285 lbf/in² (1.90 to 1.97 MPa).
A further six Selkirks classed T 1c were built by the Montreal Locomotive Works shop in 1949.
These later T 1's were semi-streamlined and were painted with CPR tuscan red panels along their running boards and on the tender sides with gold leaf border trim.

Immediately after its arrival the railway gave the locomotive a thorough overhauling and also built a special track on which to move her from the main line, over Higgins Avenue to her first location, which was in Sir William Whyte Park, opposite the railway station.

Contemporary U.S. road locomotives do not have separately excited windings; however, there has been other work in this direction, based in computer-control systems, that has included wheel-slip detection and control and wheel-creep systems, in which the windings are under separate control (see below).
The power is delivered to the individual locomotives or cars generally either by a track level third rail (there are some fourth rail systems, too) or through overhead wires known as catenary).
In electric locomotive (or MU) applications, the use of DC (as on the Metro North [ex New York Central] Hudson and Harlem lines and on the LIRR) requires closely spaced substations to convert AC to DC, stations more closely spaced than might be required for a similar AC distribution system.

The Selkirks were constructed to maintain the smooth flow of mainline Canadian Pacific traffic through the treacherous winding curves and heavy grades of the 262 Calgary Revelstoke mountain territory run.
The zenith of Canadian steam locomotive development in this area was reached with the introduction of the awesomely proportioned 2-10-4 type.
The goal of the TIa 2-10-4 locomotive designers was to produce an engine capable of handling the increasing train weights which were being encountered on the run.
