The southern Selkups, living on both sides of the Ob river, had already for some time had contact with Russians, and were well on their way to assimilation, while the northern Selkups lived in relative isolation in the Taz river valley.
The economic regress of the Selkups by the beginning of the 17th century is explained by the abundance of fur-bearing mammals characteristic of Western Siberia, which became one of the major centers of the concentration of fur traders from various countries of that time.
Reindeer herding was the occupation of the northern Selkups.

 Endangered Languages of Siberia - The Selkup Language
The Selkup are dispersed on a large area of Western Siberia between the Middle Ob and the Yenisei in the territory of the Tomsk region, the Krasnoselkup and the Pur districts of the Yamalo-Nenets autonomous area, and the Turukhansk district of the Krasnoyarsk territory.
In the Tomsk region the Selkup reside in the middle flow of the Ob and its tributaries the Ket’, the Tym, the Parabel’, and the Vasyugan.
The Ob dialect of Selkup is taught in the primary school of the village Ivankino of the Tomsk region (in 2001-2002 10 pupils attended Selkup classes).

Selkup is the only living representative of the Southern subgroup of the Samoyed branch of the Uralic language family, spoken by the Selkups, an indigenous minority of Siberia.
The Northern dialect of Selkup is not uniform.
As the sub-dialects of the Northern Selkup are inter-intelligible, as a rule, the informant recognised the Selkup word, commented on the wrong way the word had been pronounced, and then pronounced it in his own way, according to the norms of his own sub-dialect.

The Selkup language belongs to the Samoyedic branch of the Uralic languages.
The Selkup language is divided into 3 dialects: a) the Northern or Taz Dialect (the Rivers Taz, Turukhan, Yeloghuy and Yenisey), b) the Central or Tym Dialect (the Rivers Tym, Narym, Vakh and Vasyugan), c) the Southern or Ket Dialect (the Rivers Ket and Ob).
In the 1930s the Selkup way of life was badly shattered: they were forced to settle, shamanism was ousted by militant atheism, their children were assembled in boarding schools (which meant their alienation from traditional environment and occupations), local life was governed by strangers from far away, etc.

Even language counts up to 11 participial forms, diverse adverbial participles are divided into 4 categories by their morphological characteristics: 1) uninflected; 2) inflected by the number; 3) inflected by the person and the number and having both personal and impersonal forms.
Presently this standardized written language is a language of educational literature, local mass media (newspapers), translated fiction and redacted samples of traditional folklore; samples of authentic literature are represented, mainly, by detective stories.
Even language in the written form is used in teaching the native language in pre-school institutions, in elementary school, in some districts – in high school; in all places Even language performs the function of a subjects taught while it is not a language of instruction even in pre-school institutions.

The language of the Nenets belongs to the Samoyedic branch of the Uralic languages, comprising together with the Enets and Nganasan languages its Northern Group.
The structure and basic vocabulary of the language are descended from the common Samoyedic foundation.
In 1932 the Nenets literary language was established on the basis of the Bolshaya Zemlya vernacular (one of the Central vernaculars), using the Latin alphabet.

The near 20 percent fluctuation in the figures for native language speakers is quite inexplicable.
In the past it was common that a Nganasan would be familiar with the language of the Dolgans, the Evenks or the Nenets (and vice versa) but since the 1950s Russian has developed as the lingua franca.
She knew nothing of the language or customs of the Nganasans, nevertheless she set upon an unrestrained attack on their way of life and tiraded against institutions such as shamanism.

Another aspect of the Selkup (meaning Taiga man) is the influence of the forest milieu and the Shamanistic beliefs on the endogenous coinage of words.
This study sheds new light on the historical layers of the Selkup vocabulary and also on the past of the Selkups, and their steady move from the south to the Taz river arctic area.

All these languages have no writing and they refer to the so-called disappearing languages therefore everything that is fixed and collected is and will be of great value.
The Laboratory of Siberian Languages at the Tomsk State Pedagogical University is interested in pursuing co-operative work with domestic and international institutes which have a mandate to protect indigenous languages and cultures and to make a complex research of them.
