This equation is based on the average electronic absorption gap in the UV region and the lattice absorption gap at the IR region.
The relevant Sellmeier parameters and their temperature derivatives are determined and the temperature dependence of lambda0 is shown to be dominantly driven by a temperature modulation almost-equal-to -0.4 meV/K of the electronic Sellmeier band gap.
Analysis of the Sellmeier equation shows that the temperature dependence of the refractive index originates from the temperature shift of the resonance energy of the second term in the equation.

The measured group delay per unit fibre length versus wavelength shall be fitted by the three-term Sellmeier expression: So ¹ Øo2 ¼2 ç(Ø) = ço + ÄÄ ³Ø - ÄÄÄ ³ 8 » Ø ¾ Here ço is the relative delay minimum at the zero-dispersion wavelength Øo.
Because the dispersion in the latter region is large, the reduced accuracy may be acceptable; if not, it can be improved by including data from the 1550 nm region when performing the fit.
In this case, the differentiated Sellmeier equation shall be fitted directly to the dispersion coefficient for determining Øo and So.

 Introduction to SMFD
This equation contains six coefficients, each depending on the set of four fundamental solutions and their derivatives, obtained from the set of Maxwell's equations.
Evaluation of the eigenvalue equation root would require the values of the four fundamental solution functions and their derivatives to be known at the core/cladding interface.
Research into the mathematical properties of these fundamental solution functions has revealed that the six coefficients of the eigenvalue equation are obtainable from a special initial value problem involving a system of six simultaneous linear differential equations of the first order.

The Sellmeier dispersion formula to leading order is n^2 = 1 + A \frac{\lambda^2}{\lambda^2 - \lambda^2_0}.

Encyclopedia of Laser Physics and Technology - Sellmeier formula, refractive index, Sellmeier equation
For the specification of a wavelength-dependent refractive index of a transparent optical material, one often uses a so-called Sellmeier formula (or Sellmeier equation).
Such equations are very useful as the allow to quite accurately describe the refractive index in a wide wavelength range with only a few so-called Sellmeier coefficients, which are usually obtained from measured data with some least-square fitting algorithm.
Sellmeier data are also very useful to evaluate the dispersion of a material.

Once, a reliable production method is developed a sample must be made available for optical characterization to develop a Sellmeier Equation which describes the index of refraction variation as a function of incident wavelength.
Once this data is available the PLBG developed software has been developed to allow for easy update of this data.
Once an accurate Sellmeier Equation is developed it can also be used in the Filmetrics to make comparative measurements to verify the accuracy of the measurement made by the device developed by PLBG.
