It's 1962 in a small town in Washington State, and a symbol of feminine determination and innocence by the name of Selma (pop singer Björk, whose name, for the record, rhymes with smirk not fork) has arrived from Czechoslovakia to starve pathetically with her hopeful ten-year-old son, Gene (Vladica Kostic).
A creature of joy and light and wonder and rainbows trapped in an austere, oppressive environment, Selma lives for musicals, a passion she shares with her equally dialectically challenged friend and co-worker, Kathy (Catherine Deneuve).
When Selma isn't busily staving off the utterly unmotivated advances of local yokel Jeff (Peter Stormare), she and Kathy attend musicals at the local cinema, where, to the annoyance of other audience members who “paid good money” to get in, Kathy provides a running commentary on the imagery Selma's failing eyes can no longer see.

Dancer in the Dark Movie Review by Anthony Leong from MediaCircus.net
Selma (Icelandic singer Björk) is a Czechoslovakian immigrant who has recently come to the United States to start a new life with her teenage son, Gene (Vladica Kostic).
Selma works in a local factory, where she has made friends with another European immigrant, Kathy (Catherine Deneuve of "Belle du Jour"), and attracted the amorous attention of simple-minded and shy Jeff (Peter Stormare of "Armageddon").
At first, they are fanciful breaks from reality, a celebration of Selma's minor triumphs, but eventually, they evolve into the stolen moments that stand between Selma and complete despair, a haunting representation of her last shreds of dignity.

Using minimal theatrical resources, ''Selma'' wants to be both a chronicle of Dr. King's life and times and an epic pageant of the civil-rights movement.
The performances in ''Selma'' are as crude as the score, with the white anti-King forces portrayed as cackling fiends rabid for murder.
Butler's recitations of Dr. King's most eloquent speeches have a properly oratorical tone, his dried-out lounge singer's voice is excruciatingly flat and undisciplined.

As much as the fate of its heroine Selma (Icelandic singer Bjork), this ambivalence is the true subject of DANCER IN THE DARK.
Selma is never degraded sexually, the film never suggests that God will reward her sacrifice, and it carefully grounds her tragic fate in concrete social conditions, most of them specific to American life (the wide availability of guns, capital punishment, the lack of public health care).
The daydream that brings on the first song, a duet with Catherine Deneuve set in the factory where both women work, is also directly responsible for getting her fired.
