Selma Lagerlöf was born in Mårbacka, in the province of Värmland in southern Sweden, where she grew up largely apart from other children in the little family estate.
In the midst of her efforts to provide war relief to the blockaded population of Finland, she died of a stroke at her home on March 16, 1940.

In 1914 Selma Lagerlöf herself became a member of the body that awards the Nobel Prize in literature, the Swedish Academy.
At the start of the Second World War, she sent her Nobel Prize medal to the government of Finland to help them raise money to fight the Soviet Union.

Selma Ottilia Lovisa Lagerlöf died in 1940, one year after the beginning of World War 2, in her beloved family estate of Mårbacka.

She had been writing poetry ever since she was a child, but she did not publish anything until 1890, when a Swedish newspaper gave her the first prize in a literary competition and published excerpts from her first novel, Gösta Berlings Saga (published in 1891 and very succesfull).

Considered a masterpiece since first published in 1907, this enchanting, remarkably original work by a Nobel Prize-winning author, records the adventures of a mischievous 14-year-old who is changed into a tiny being, transported across the Swedish countryside on the back of a goose, and learns about nature, geography and folklore.
Nonetheless, once this minor fault (and I am not really sure you can call it a fault) is recognized, the story of Nils is a fantastic one, seemingly not at all distant from native folklore and fairy tales, rich with an earthiness that simply doesn't exist in modern children literature.
There are passages here that are simply too delightful for description; one which comes to mind is a gathering of all the animals to celebrate the coming of spring--the image and significance crafted by the author are bound to stay with the reader for a life-time.
