Bjork: SelmaSongs: Music from the Motion Picture Dancer in the Dark (2000): Reviews
SelmaSongs is a little big brave collection of songs that makes me feel better whenever I listen to it.
Selmasongs works as an album, not just as a souvenir of a daring cinematic and musical venture.
The most notable feature of Selmasongs is how much it sounds like her most recent musical adventures, regardless of the album's intended cinematiccontext.

Selmasongs is the musical companion to Lars von Trier's Palme d'Or-winning Dancer In The Dark, and Bjork's songs are inextricably bound to its themes, but not so much so that it isn't well worth a listen on its own merits.
Selmasongs captures a sense of the escapism inherent to Selma's plight.
Selmasongs is too short of a teaser for the film.

Selmasongs: Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack Dancer in the Dark is, and is not, a Björk album.
Selmasongs also succeeds as a soundtrack, sketching in details of Selma's story.
Intimate and theatrical, innovative and tied to tradition, Selmasongs paints a portrait of a woman losing her sight, but it maintains Björk's unique vision.

We have asked repeatedly that old threads not be bumped, but it seems as if you cannot abide by such a simple request, so we are abiding by the request for you.
If it weren't for that, Selmasongs would have to be sold more as a maxi-b-sides than an album on its own.
Selmasongs has 7 songs on it and is around 40 minutes of music.

Bjork - Selmasongs - Music From Dancer In The Dark - almost cool music review
Although this album came out well over half a year ago, I didn't buy it until recently for two different reasons, one of which is pretty silly.
Overall, Selmasongs is an excellent release, albeit a bit short (yeah, yeah, I've already mentioned it a couple times).
With her upcoming release already announced for fall of 2001, it's a nice little release to tide you over until it comes, and it shows she hasn't lost a thing since her last release.

But that doesn't make her acting debut any less powerful, especially since so much of it is tied to a new set of songs written specifically for the subversive musical.
Selmasongs derives its title from the name of Björk's character, and, like any good soundtrack, its songs relate directly to the action on the screen.

Björk: Selmasongs - PopMatters Music Review
To feel extreme joy, extreme pain is needed; it's the idea of yin-yang in the form of music.
Selmasongs is the companion album to the film Dancer in the Dark directed by Danish born Lars von Trier, who is best known for his film, Breaking the Waves.
Björk produced the songs along with Vincent Mendoza, the conductor for the orchestra on the album.

Selmasongs is even more cinematic, and not only because the strings are now part of a full orchestra.
Set in a factory, "Cvalda" begins with clattering, industrial clanks and hums that coalesce into a swinging techno beat before the orchestra sweetens Björk's vocals with strings and horns; it's a noisy, jumpy, and exciting track that features a cameo from co-star Catherine Deneuve.
While it's filled with rampant creativity, startling emotional leaps, and breathtaking vocals and arrangements, it isn't as playful as her other albums, even 1997's relatively dark Homogenic.

Not content with having a leading role in a high-production musical, she also wrote and produced the entire soundtrack, "Selmasongs." The soundtrack is simply one of the best soundtracks that money can buy and ranks alongside Homogenic and Vespertine as Bjork's greatest work to date.
At just over thirty minutes, it's a short and brief soundtrack, but it really is worth paying top money for it because you're sure to get years of musical enjoyment out of this.
Selmasongs was the fourth album by Bjork that I bought (around a month ago), and I haven't looked back.

In the midst of all her hardship, the one thing that keeps her spirits up is musicals.
This song is important, in that it embodies the duality of the film, with its many contrasts in characters and especially camera-work, which changes whenever one of the "musical" numbers starts.
All in all, Bjork used "Selmasongs" as an album and a project to further her avant-garde intentions while not getting wholly lost in them.

Since it's partially a musical, one would assume its soundtrack, Selmasongs, would reach the same level of quality.
Unfortunately, several tracks are different on the album than they are in the actual film and don't convey as much power and emotion as they should.
It's hard to relate to or understand all the songs on Selmasongs without seeing Dancer in the Dark beforehand, so it's probably best to see the film when it opens on Oct. 6 and buy the soundtrack later.

Björk: Selmasongs - Release Music Magazine review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Written mainly by Björk, her collaborators Mark Bell and Icelandic poet Sjön - and von Trier himself, "Selmasongs" is an album that stands up well in its own right.
With all its use of odd sounds, orchestral explosions and musical clichés "Selmasongs" actually sounds quite a lot like Pig masterpiece "Praise the Lard" could have sounded if Raymond Watts had used a live orchestra instead of a sampler.
A wonderfully schizophrenic album, "Selmasongs" at times reaches heights, both musically and emotionally, that Björk has previously only hinted at.

Depending upon the listener's affinity for catch-as-catch-can eclectica, she could come across either open-armed inviting or claws-on-a-chalkboard off-putting; hysterical or haunting; lushly seductive or shrilly unhinged.
Selmasongs -- Dancer in the Dark's dense yet slender soundtrack -- certainly proves no exception to this general trend.
Essentially a 7-song, 32-minute glorified EP, Selmasongs picks up where Björk's 1995 video-licious single (It's Oh So Quiet) left off.

village voice > music > Björk Selmasongs by Scott Woods
Depending on how you feel about whoopee cushions and screeching motorists, Björk can sound hilarious, scary, pretentious, or merely annoying, though in a context of locked-down beats and verse-chorus-verse structures, the whoopee cushion is more palatable.
Selmasongs, Björk's new mini-soundtrack for Lars von Trier's highly touted Dancer in the Dark (in which she also stars), has too much dark and not enough dancer—textured passages that might sound great with luscious visuals, but are mere din from a cheap CD boom box.
The only exception is "Cvalda," a gleefully anarchistic '30s Hollywood musical homage in which Björk bends her throat into a chorus not dissimilar to Einstürzende Neubauten (though she didn't have to go and spend a lot of money on power tools to achieve the effect).

In the film, Björk plays Selma, a Czechoslovakian immigrant who is slowly losing her sight.
Her character has a passionate relationship with musicals and Selmasongs is a collection of her fantastical dreamscapes that are featured throughout the film. The album, like the film, opens with an overture written and produced solely by Björk, and orchestrated and conducted by Vincent Mendoza.
The piece is a solemn prelude to the musical numbers that follow.

They've created a record, 'SelmaSongs', that is at once deeply moving, sonically radical and the soundtrack to a musical film, the Palme d'Or-winning 'Dancer In the Dark'.
She may not have written the words, but Bjvrk's emotional investment in songs like 'I've Seen It All' (really sad) and 'Scatterheart' (really really sad) is undeniable; making this album - 'in character' as poor, doomed Selma - totally seductive as A Bjvrk Record.
Inspired by the industrial grind of Selma's world, the beats literally come out of train-tracks, machinery and a record stuck in a groove, inviting comparisons to musique concrete and experimental electronica (so-called 'glitch house').

As the curtain rises on Björk’s brilliant new release, Selmasongs, it’s blissfully easy to forget this short work is “only a movie sound track.” And that’s why it succeeds.
A collection of seven tracks created for director Lars Von Trier’s minimalist film Dancer in the Dark, Björk’s Selmasongs wisely abandons all signs of indie film-school subtlety.
Instead, Selmasongs is a playful hint at what unearthly delights are waiting in the wings.

Her latest release, Selmasongs is the soundtrack to the new Lars von Trier film Dancer In The Dark, with Björk in the starring role.
When Björk was building up to the genius of Homogenic by plodding through her "journals" of past years in the form of two outstanding albums, we caught a magnificent glimpse of things to come in 1995's Post, which showcased Björk's ability to transcend genre.
Björk plays a woman who is going blind; the obvious differences between the fictional character she brought to life and the autobiographical style of Björk's music must have been difficult to work with.

Here lies the premise of the Selmasongs EP.
The seven tracks sound like something straight out of a Gene Kelly movie but with one major addendum: Björk's wildly imaginative, postmodern songwriting.
Each track captures some of her original verve, which only continues to strengthen with such new projects as "Drawing Restraint 9."

 In Brief: Björk's new "Selmasongs"
In brief: in her review of West Side Story, Pauline Kael wrote disapprovingly that the film was essentially a musical for people who didn't like musicals.
The same could be said of Björk's new Selmasongs (Elektra), the soundtrack to Lars Von Trier's Dancer in the Dark, in which she stars as a working-class woman who dreams of starring in musicals.
The album has its charms -- Björk's voice soars on "Scatter Heart," and her duet with Radiohead's Thom Yorke has a mambo-style sexiness -- but its overdone orchestrations and outsize emotions lack the resonance of Carousel and its metaphysical overtones or even the easygoing peacetime fizz of On the Town.
