The Selwyn district is a predominantly rural area in central Canterbury, on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island.
The Selwyn District is governed along democratic lines, with all residents aged 18 or older eligible to vote or stand for office.
The Selwyn District as a unit of government was formed in 1989 from a legislated merger of the Malvern and Ellesmere counties, along with a portion of Paparua County.

Colin Hill, the immediate past president of Architectural Designers New Zealand, slammed local authorities for the huge backlog of consent applications lodged that are not being processed within the statutory period.
This court outcome was extremely disappointing to all building practitioners who are frustrated, not just with Selwyn District Council, but all other local bodies whose failures to meet the requirements of the Building Act are having devastating effects on the building industry, he said.

The Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand is concerned that five meter (16 foot) wide new roads with substantial earthworks have been constructed through an outstanding natural landscape in the Southern Alps, on Flock Hill Station adjacent to the scenic Arthurs Pass Highway corridor.
“The Selwyn District Council allowed the work to proceed without a resource consent until media coverage of the issue by the press in Christchurch and lobbying of Council staff by Forest and Bird forced the council to require a consent to be applied for,” Lockwood said.

The sentence “We call upon all like-minded New Zealanders to take similar action [similar to putting an axe through the window of the PM’s electorate office] of their own” is an incitement to violence.
The police could have charged Selwyn under these; the fact that they didn't suggested they realised that these elements were lacking, and thatthe charge was essentially a crock.
