Topic: Semantic class

Semantics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Semantics is often opposed to syntax, in which case the former pertains to what something means while the latter pertains to the formal structure/patterns in which something is expressed (for example written or spoken).
Semantics is distinguished from ontology (study of existence) in being about the use of a word more than the nature of the entity referenced by the word.
Semantics is a subfield of linguistics that is traditionally defined as the study of meaning of (parts of) words, phrases, sentences, and texts.

The form class consists of many semantically homogenous small verb-classes Not only in traditional grammar but in quite recent theorizing, it is quite accepted that formal classes might in actuality consist of a series of semantically homogenous small groups, each comprising of a separate semantic field with some core and some peripheral elements.
Results: 1: Semantic fields of DO in children Table 2 presents all the verbs children learned as their first 6 verbs with a direct object, classified according to the semantic role of the direct object.
As we expect semantic similarity to lead the relationships of transfer or analogy, and the first 6 verbs and their direct objects are more dissimilar than similar among themselves, the results raise the possibility that maybe the first 6 verbs are not involved in learning processes involving analogy and transfer.

Each component has its semantic information represented by one or more semantic "classes"; this is different from syntactic types such as noun, verb, noun phrase, etc. The most basic semantic classes are "object", "action", "attribute", etc., and more specific classes are derived from them with the IS_A relation as in semantic network theory.
Semantic classes also help the computer arrange a good word order when generating a target language sentence, and match unclassified argument values with the correct macro arguments.
The computer will find the semantic class "cat" for the word "cat", and then locate its class member "drink" (or "drink" may be the class member of a parent class of "cat" such as "animal") which is a verbal macro.

The Need to Draw Second Language   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
If verb classes remain inaccurate even at an advanced level, an argument could be put forward in favour of making learners aware of the semantic criteria that distinguish one verb class from a semantically related one.
While accuracy in learner responses within a semantic class consisting of known verbs would be ambiguous between item learning and system learning (i.e., semantic categorization), accuracy in responses related to previously unknown low-frequency verbs whose meanings were introduced to the learner at the time of testing could provide more definitive evidence of semantic categorization.
Furthermore, the pictures used in the tests were tested for their semantic transparency through the responses of 18 non-native speakers of English in the pilot testing phase, as well as the responses of five native speakers.

After selecting one of these homographs, several semantic classes (groups) of words strongly associated with it in the training sample are displayed.
Note that the words in each semantic class are not (necessarily) synonyms of the homograph “base”, but do have a strong semantic relationship with it and each other, called semantic affinity.
The second class and the word “base” comprise a semantic class describing the lowest part of a hill, mountain, or cliff.

Any semantic aspect will be considered to belong to the province of a specific document processor for the language, although the technique used for specifying the grammar will make it easy to add the specification of the semantics, or several alternative semantic specifications if desired.
The deferred class CONSTRUCT describes the general notion of construct; instances of this class and its descendants are specimens of the constructs of a grammar.
To build a semantic class in in step 2 it is often convenient to use multiple inheritance from a syntactic class and a "semantics-only" class.

Phonesthemes are the result of sound semantics filtered through these classes, and these semantic classes are defined by reference, or the arbitrary mapping between sequences of phonemes (like letters) and the 'outside world'.
He was right that the semantic class that a sequence of letters falls into is largely arbitrary that is, you can't predict for any given language whether the sequence of sounds 'dog' is going to refer to an animal, or a period of time, or a musical instrument or whatever.

Semantic Lexicons: Between Ontology and Terminology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Semantic analysis of textual documents requires annotation of terms with semantic classes, as provided by a semantic lexicon, which allows for normalization of different lexical realizations (terms) for the same semantic class (concept).
A semantic lexicon may be viewed as an abstraction over a given corpus that in turn is used to analyze the semantic structure of a new corpus.
In consequence also, we treat existing lexical semantic resources as a bootstrap in this process that need to be adapted to more specific or different domains through both tuning and extension.

Semantic class   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Information concerning semantic class is considered in the present context only insofar as it enters into the account of lexically-governed syntactic processes (such as frame alternation).
For each slot filler, semantic class information is optional, although it is highly recommended whenever it has a bearing on a proper account of phenomena which are already represented in the lexicon.
In terms of extensional semantics, this means that an alternating argument must belong to the intersection between the sets of entities and the set of volitional animates.

PRICE Application Class Semantic Parameter Library: Units of Measure
The base class functionality requires that a source object in an assignment operation be an instance of the class of which the target object is an instance, or be an instance of a class derived from that class.
While such a class type restriction is safe in dimensional objects (a mass is never going to be a kind of length), it is overly restrictive for computational purposes.
If the target is an instance of the dimensional foundation class exactly, then assignment is allowed if the source follows the normal rule, that is, if the source is an instance of that class, or of some class derived from that class.

A construct class describes the syntax of a given construct through a function called production, which is a direct representation of the corresponding production.
Any construct class which is a descendant of CONSTRUCT may redefine one or both so that they will perform the semantic actions that the document processor must apply to specimens of the corresponding construct.
To execute these steps in a simple and convenient fashion, it is useful to declare the root class as a descendant of the lexical interface class.
