		Thus, vitamin A deficiency can be "a double whammy" on the immune system, Dr. Semba said, because pregnancy itself increases demand for the vitamin for both the woman and fetus and H.I.V. infection can interfere with intake and absorption of vitamin A and can deplete existing stores.
		Semba's team found the link in a study of 567 H.I.V.-infected pregnant women at a hospital in Blantyre, Malawi.
		Semba said he believed that vitamin A deficiency could be an important factor in explaining the differences.

		Richard D. Semba from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, and colleagues measured hemoglobin and plasma ferritin in 136 HIV-positive and 61 HIV-negative female injection drug users.
		Among the HIV-positive women, the prevalence of anemia was 44.1% and for HIV-negative women the prevalence of anemia was 26.2% (p < 0.17), according to the report in the February 1st issue of the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes.
		Semba's team adds that "further research is needed to determine whether the benefits of iron supplementation in this population outweigh the potential risks."

		At around three minutes, something akin to a small flute is improvising whilst Semba starts to tighten up his drumming, the kick drum thumping things into line, and Laswell starts moving into a circular, gliding groove, Kamiyama adding weird, rhythmic squelching noises, little splashes of cold acid rain.
		A minute later and he's improvising on the keyboard in short disjointed chunks, whilst Semba begins to build up a head of steam via a repetitive but powerful cymbal pulse.
		What Semba and Kamiyama have managed to do is create compositions that always sound focused, with enough leeway for improvisation to give the listener the impression that he's hearing each piece develop as he listens; an exploration of timbres, rhythms, and sounds that wends its intriguing way unpredictably, without ever becoming monotonous or atonal.

	Prevalence, Cumulative Incidence of Anemia High Among HIV-Infected Women
		Richard D. Semba and other HERS Group investigators analyzed data on the 797 HIV-positive and 389 HIV-negative women who presented for at least two study visits.
		Fever and zidovudine use were risk factors for anemia in the pre-HAART period of the study (1993 to 1996) but not during the HAART period (1996 to 2000).
		Anemia has been found to increase the risk of death in HIV-infected adults generally, but Dr. Semba's team is the first to specify this observation for HIV-positive women.

	New & Noteworthy in Nutrition
		Earlier studies in Malawi by Richard Semba and others of Johns Hopkins suggested the possibility that women deficient in vitamin A may be more likely than others to transmit the HIV virus in breastmilk (New and Noteworthy in Nutrition No. 27).
		But after the Semba team followed up with a more definitive study that provided vitamin A supplements, they found no evidence to confirm the premise.
		Observed in the study was that most women do not, in fact, have high HIV levels in their breastmilk - nor do they transmit the virus to their infants - unless they also have mastitis.
