  Rigid-rod polymers - Patent 5976437
The rigid-rod and segmented rigid-rod polymers of the present invention when used in a blend with a flexible polymer are the primary source of tensile strength and modulus of the resulting molecular composite.
The polymers of the present invention comprise a rigid-rod backbone comprising at least about 25 phenylene units, preferably at least about 100 phenylene units, wherein at least about 95%, and preferably 99%, of the monomer units are coupled together via 1,4 linkages and the polymer and its monomers are soluble in a common solvent system.
Polymer pairs which are not miscible can often be made miscible by addition of a third polymer, typically a low MW copolymer having segments similar to the polymers to be blended.

The polymers used are typically thermoplastics and are melted by heating the barrel.
Thermosetting polymers and elastomers can be fed, mixed with additives and crosslinking initiated by the heat in the barrel, usually completing the crosslinking after passing through the die.
That is the elastic nature of the polymer is to remember its shape, resist change and recover the shape it had prior to the distortion imposed by the die.

The smectic phase in a colloidal suspension of semi-flexible virus particles
Although the particles are charged, it is possible to approximately account for the electrostatic repulsion by considering the particles to have a larger, effective hard rod diameter determined by calculating the excluded volume of a pair of rods averaged over their angular distribution function [1,26,27].
In the isotropic phase the angular correlation between rods is short ranged [28], while in the nematic the rods are parallel, on average, to a given direction.
, the flexibility is important enough to narrow the width of the coexistence region (w) by a factor of three from the rigid rod limit and suppress the isotropic - cholesteric transition to higher concentrations.

Catheter obturator with automatic feed and control - Patent 5064415
Preferred polymers for the rod are the polyolefins, such as polyethylene or polypropylene, and polytetrafluoroethylene, polyester, polyamide, polyurethane, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride and liquid crystal polymers.
With this invention by contrast, an obturator rod is fed into the already in place catheter for the purposes of occluding the lumen of the catheter, as desired, without having to use the conventional expensive and cumbersome procedures of heparin or saline locks.
Obviously, when the rod swells, the dimension of the rod with the coating increases and this has been found to be approximately an increase of one-half the thickness of the coating in place prior to any swelling.

The bio-erodible matrix is preferably composed of an absorbable or dissoluable polymer or polymers intimately mixed with or coating the medicament.
The major requirement is that the polymers be slowly absorbed or dissolved in body fluids so that they will continuously expose new surfaces containing the medicament as they slowly erode and release the medicament particles into the fluids in the rumen over a long period of time.
The inner core heavy metal rod 12 is surrounded by an outer core of an absorbable polymer matrix 14 containing admixed therein particles of medicament 16, and which outer core cylinder surface 18 is surrounded on all sides by a sleeve-like, fine, polyester mesh 20.

The flexible backbone LCP polyesters have been shown to crystallize from the LC state by chain folding, similar to that observed for normal flexible polymers such as polyethylene, for flexible segment lengths as small as 4 CH2s; this occurs even though one of the polyester series is a random terpolymer.

Additionally, we outline the synthesis of a fd-polymer complex and show that polymers covalently attached to the virus effectively increase the diameter of the rods.
By changing the ionic strength it is possible to observe the crossover from the regime where the rods are electrostatically stabilized to where they are sterically stabilized by repulsion between virus-bound polymers.
The depletion interaction creates an attractive interaction between the rods and when enough polymer is added we observe a direct isotropic - smectic transition, rather that the sequence isotropic - nematic - smectic that occurs with increasing virus concentration in the absence of polymer.
