 Shotgun - Wikipedia
In hunting circles, the shotgun is used for bird hunting, although it is also increasingly used in deer hunting in semi-populated areas where the long-distance travel of the rifle bullet may pose too great a hazard.
Shotgun also refers to a passenger riding next to a driver in a vehicle (and in old times (wild west?) carrying a shotgun to protect the vehicle and its contents).
Many modern smooth bore shotguns using rifled slugs are extremely accurate out to 75 yards or more, while the rifled barrel shotgun with the use of sabot slugs are typically accurate to 100 yards and beyond -- well within the range of the majority of kill shots by experienced deer hunters using shotguns.

Semi-automatic shotgun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Semi-automatic shotguns are a subclass of shotgun that are able to fire a shell after every trigger pull, without any of the manual reloading typical in most shotgun designs.
Many semi-automatic shotguns also provide an optional manual means of operation such as pump-action or via a charging handle.
The reason shotguns do not tend to use this system is that shotgun shells are extremely over powered compared to the smaller ammunition used in other small arms, and it is difficult to design parts reliable enough to harness that heavy force for complicated mechanical operations.

 Shotguns For Self-Defense Mossberg 500, Winchester 1300, Remington 870, Ithaca 37, SPAS-12, Saiga, Protecta
Saiga shotgun is reloaded automatically due to the energy of powder combustion gases bled from the barrel bore through the barrel port and is used to deliver only the single shots.
Shotguns are generally quite imposing weapons, so even only the picking up a shotgun by a defender might put an intruder to flight.
The spent shells are ejected automatically from the chamber at the moment of the next shot by using a small amount of powder combustion gases.

In the 'Saiga-12' shotgun due to usage of heavy-duty ammunition, the speed of recoil of the bolt carrier is substantially greater.

 Double barreled shotgun - Wikipedia
Typically, double-barreled shotguns are not pump action shotguns or semi-automatic shotguns.
The double-barreled shotgun is therefore an excellent tool for many hunting, pest control or home defense applications, but may be less useful for police force or military applications.
In general the entire barrel is hinged to the stock and the cartridges are changed at the base of the barrel while the gun is in the open position.

 Tech Brief: The Combat Shotgun
The shotgun is one of the most common firearms encountered throughout the Imperium and beyond, serving in the role of hunting weapon, pest controller, defensive arm and combat weapon.
Because of their multi-purpose capabilities, shotguns are often the weapon of choice for those who require a single weapon, typically residents of rural areas where pest control and hunting are still activities.
The earliest pure fighting shotguns appear in the form of the 'coach gun', typically a double barrel break open shotgun of 18mm or greater and having relatively abbreviated barrels (50cm or less) unsuitable for most hunting, but more maneuverable in restricted space, and adequate for firing buck shot or slugs.
