Gobi Desert - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is bounded by the Mongolian-Manchurian grassland to the north, the Yellow River Plain to the southeast, and the Alashan Plateau semi-desert to the southeast and east.
To the south of the Kuruk-tagh lie the desert of Lop, the desert of Kum-tagh, and the valley of the Bulunzir-gol.
It consists of the desert basins and low mountains lying between the Gobi Altay range on the north, the Helan Mountains to the southeast, and the Qilian Mountains and northeastern portion of the Tibetan Plateau on the southwest.

It is bounded on the north by the Altai Mountains that separate the desert from grassland and forest ecosystems that are transitional to the Siberian taiga.
Desert steppe species are found primarily at higher elevations, and saxaul forests occur on mountain slopes.
In the drier areas of the Gobi Desert in southern Mongolia, several years may pass with no measurable precipitation, or enough rain may fall in one summer to create a green flush of vegetation and fill hundreds of ephemeral ponds with fresh water.

Sonoran Desert Network - National Park Service
At a regional scale, the Sonoran Desert serves as a transition between the Sierra Madre and the Rocky Mountains, the Pacific and Gulf coasts, and the coastal lowlands of Baja and the mid-continent.
As the Sonoran is a hot desert, it should not be surprising that summer air temperatures routinely exceed 40°C, and often reach 48°C. These high near-surface temperatures interact with cool, moist air in the atmosphere to produce the violent thunderstorms of the summer monsoons.
Bounded on the north by the Mogollon Rim, the Sonoran Desert grades into the Chihuahuan Desert to the east, the Mohave Desert to the west, and the tropical forests and montane forests of central Mexico to the south.

Desertification Monitoring: Is the Desert Encroaching?
The desert boundary, defined as the border between semi-desert bush/shrub and grassland and with a more or less continuous vegetation cover, and areas with no or very scattered vegetation cover were mapped together with a delineation of other strata.
The 1975 desert boundary was mapped by Lamprey (Ref. 6) and compared with the one presented on a vegetation map of the Sudan by Ref. 23 in 1958.
It seems, however, that the desert boundary described in the vegetation map of Ref. 23 from 1958 was defined to follow the 75 mm isohyet, located 90-100 km north of the 100 mm isohyet, rather than actually mapped (Ref. 12).

The dominant desert shrub habitat is used by burrowing owls, short-eared owls, ferruginous hawks, sage sparrows, lark sparrows, western meadowlarks, loggerhead shrikes, horned larks, and occasional irruptions of lark buntings.
Desert shrub communities are characterized by prairie dogs (white-tailed and Gunnison), badger, kit fox, ferruginous hawk, turkey vulture, and burrowing owl.
It occurs primarily in the spring in the north and primarily in the winter in the south.

Chihuahuan desert scrub is characterized by the presence of small shrubs and having "indicator plants" such as tarbush, creosotebush, Chihuahuan whitethorn acacia and sandpaperbush.
This habitat is found in isolated areas on the lower slopes and desert valleys between 3500 and 4000 feet in elevation.
As the name implies these areas are partially desert, but usually recieve 12 or more inches of annual rainfall.

Desert soil inorganic carbon storage (in calcrete) has also been discussed as a factor tending to 'damp down' the change between glacial and interglacial carbon storage, because semi-arid soils are relatively rich in carbonates (Schlesinger 1992).
The paradoxically high soil carbon storage found for temperate desert soils has major implications for calculating carbon storage on the broader Quaternary time scale, because under the cooler and drier conditions of the last Glacial, cool deserts and semi-deserts were one of the world's most widespread ecosystems.
In addition, inorganic carbon in desert soils should not be seen as an analogue of organic carbon in terms of its effects on atmospheric CO2 levels.

 Desert Geologic Features - DesertUSA
Deserts are usually created because they are located in a Rain Shadow -- a dry region downwind of mountain ranges caused by air losing its moisture as it passes over mountains.
Because of the factors above, deserts often have less vegetation to prevent erosion, which in turn leads to further barrenness through Deflation -- the removal of silt and sand particles from the land surface by wind.
Desert areas usually have Internal Drainage -- when streams drain toward landlocked basins rather than flowing eventually to the sea.
