Trailing arm - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A semi-trailing arm suspension is an independent rear suspension system for automobiles in which each wheel hub is located only by a large, roughly triangular arm that pivots at two points.
A trailing-arm suspension is an automobile suspension design in which one or more arms (or "links") are connected between (and perpendicular to) the axle and the chassis.
Trailing-arm and multilink suspension designs are much more commonly used for the rear wheels of a vehicle where they can allow for a flatter floor and more cargo room.

Rear wheel steering system - Patent 4709935
The rear wheel suspension arrangement allows the trailing arm to displace substantially in the lateral direction of the front end thereof and which comprises an actuator for steering a rear wheel by operating the trailing arm to displace the front portion of the trailing arm essentially in the lateral direction of the vehicle.
Lateral arms are rotatably coupled at the outer ends thereof to the rear portion of the trailing arm and extending essentially in the lateral direction of the vehicle by pivotally securing the inner ends thereof to the vehicle body.
Thus, arm 6 formed of arm 8 and arm 9 is allowed to displace at the front portion thereof in the lateral direction of the vehicle by the relative rotation of the arms 8 and 9 generated by deforming bushings 12 and 70.

 AutoZine Technical School - Suspension
No matter semi-trailing arm or pure trailing arm suspensions, since they are rigidly attached the wheel, inevitably more shock and noise could be transferred to the car body, especially under hard cornering or running on bumpy roads.
The arm is relatively large compare with other suspensions' control arms because it is in single piece and the upper surface supports the coil spring.
In theory, any independent suspensions having 3 control arms or more are multi-link.

Suspension The assembly of springs, shock absorbers, torsion bars, joints, arms, etc., that cushions the shock of bumps on the road and serves to keep the wheels in constant contact with the road, thereby improving control and traction.
Strut A suspension element in which a reinforced shock absorber is used as one of the wheel's locating members, typically by solidly bolting the wheel hub to the bottom end of the strut.
On a car with a strut suspension, the steering axis is defined by the line through the strut mount on top and the ball joint on the bottom.

Located between the wheel carrier and the trailing arm, the hub consist of two flexible rubber bushings and one inflexible steel bearing, each of which acts as a combination mounting and pivoting point.
Forged-aluminum control arms and wheel hubs were chosen to provide the necessary stiffness with the least unsprung weight, and the suspension's mounting system is specially designed to resist lateral and twisting forces while discouraging dive during braking.

In the 1930s, the Christie suspension was developed, which allowed the use of coil springs inside a vehicle's armoured hull, by redirecting the direction of travel using a bell crank.
Horstmann suspension was a variation which used a combination of bell crank and exterior coil springs, in use from the 1930s to the 1990s.
New suspension technologies in development include a system from the Bose Corporation which uses computer-controlled motors to automatically adjust the suspension to changing road surfaces, keeping a vehicle level and in contact with the road even at high speed over bumpy roads, or in hard cornering.

 Bump Steer - Lambo Lounge
This system is called semi-trailing arm because the wheels move in an arc determined by a triangular suspension arm with pivot points at the differential and forward of the rear wheels.
Many cars which used semi-trailing arms avoided the worst of the bump steer problem, and the related camber change problem, by having the suspension set so low that there was already considerable negative camber, and the toe was then set for this height.
This MacPherson strut, lower A-arm suspension was mounted to a cradle similar to those used on the front wheel drive sedans, but since there was no steering the tie rods were bolted to the cradle to act as toe links.

E30 Rear Semi-Trailing Arm Roll Center
That being said, since a semi-trailing arm has a fixed instant axis (it's axis of rotation) then the instant centers on a semi-trailing arm suspension remain fixed relative to the chassis.
What you want is that as a car rolls, and one side of the suspension compresses while the other side extends, that the two instant centers move in such a way that the relationship of the roll center to the chassis remains relatively unchanged.
A roll center which moves around a lot as the suspension compresses and extends is considered undesirable, and can make a car "feel weird" to drive.

Rear Suspension: Trailing Arm vs Coil Spring - 3 Series - Automotive Forums .com Car Chat- A Message Board for Every Make and Model
The main reason semi-trailing arms are a desirable design is that it's simple, and the camber change when the car is leaning around a corner helps keep the wheels perpendicular to the ground.
The control arm pivots along a single axis on two bushings, and it extends from the center of the car diagonally outward - hence the term 'semi-trailing'.
The multi-link rear suspension used on the other E36 models causes the wheel to travel in a fairly complicated compound arc.
