  Berzelian Classification System
Semimetals and nonmetals are brittle and conduct poorly compared to metals.
The lattices of the semimetals are composed of bonds intermediate in type between metallic and covalent.
The structure of the hexagonal semimetals is therefore based on a distorted form of cubic closest packing in which sheets of atoms parallel to the base of the crystal separate into pairs.

 Bands, Bonds, and Doping
Semimetals (Figure 5), which lie between metals and nonmetals on the periodic table, have an energy gap between the valence and conduction bands (band gap) similar to nonmetals (not a continuous band like metals), but the band gap for semimetals is smaller than for nonmetals.
Semimetals, which occupy intermediate positions on the periodic table, have bonds of intermediate strength and directionality, and a small band gap.
The band gap in semimetals is small enough (recall Figure 5) that an electron can be promoted from the filled lower-energy band to the unfilled higher-energy band with a moderate input of energy (such as the thermal energy that dissipates in the solid when electrical current is passed through it).

His semimetals theory explains lattice and electronic features, infrared transparency, and excitonic phase transitions.
Apart from that, I constructed the theory of bismuth-type semimetals, explaining their unusual crystalline lattices, electronic spectra with an extremely small number of carriers and effective masses, transparency thresholds in the infrared and excitonic transitions in a strong magnetic field.
In the cycle of quasi-one-dimensional conductivity, I obtained the exact distribution function of resistivities in the mesoscopic regime and derived the temperature dependence of the resistivity in realistic physical conditions; I also predicted the triplet superconductivity in Bechgaard salts.

Semimetals or metalloids possess characteristics of both metals and nonmetals.
Semimetals may act as either metals or nonmetals, depending on the situation.
In other words, in certain compounds, semimetals may bond with nonmetals (acting as metals), while in others they may bond with metals (acting as nonmetals).

Elemental semimetals, such as bismuth and graphite, are intriguing materials to study because of their high magnetoresistance, low carrier density and high purity.
For example in our study of ultrathin bismuth films, we find that the transport behavior is greatly affected by the presence of metallic surface states, which become evident in the thinnest films and are presumed to be responsible for a “surface superconducting state” seen both in tunneling and transport anomalies.
We have also studied bulk samples of both these semimetals in magnetic fields high enough to place all the carriers in the lowest Landau level.

However, in spite of extensive experimental studies of bulk materials at low temperatures and at high magnetic fields/pressures, direct evidence of these ground states have not been given to date.
According to the elementary one-electron band theory, crystalline solids with an even number of electrons per unit cell are classified into either semiconductors (insulators) or semimetals.
In semiconductors an integral number of energy bands are fully occupied by electrons while the rest are completely empty, whereas in semimetals partially-filled conduction-band and valence-band with equal carrier densities with opposite carrier signs coexist at different points in k space as a consequence of band overlap.

Yes, metalloids – but these elements are also called semimetals (as you have learned, scientists can never have just one name for anything).
Everything which we haven’t described as a metal or semimetal (metalloid) is called a nonmetal.
They are all nonmetals except tellurium, which is a semimetal.

We study the thermoelectric power of the carriers in quantum dots of semimetals under large magnetic field, taking Bi as an example.
The numerical results are presented for McClure and Choi, hybrid, Cohen, Lax and ellipsoidal parabolic energy band models of Bi.
In addition, the corresponding well-known expression for the thermoelectric power in the presence of a classically strong magnetic field in bulk specimens of parabolic semiconductors has been obtained as a special case of our generalized expressions.

The objects investigated are metal and semimetal single crystals, thin films, disordered and inhomogeneous metal systems including amorphous condensates.
Yu.F.Komnik, E.I.Buchstab and V.V.Andrievskii found an anomalous size effect in the Bi film conductivity, which is related to the surface bending of the potential in semimetals (1975).

Once the metals and semimetals are removed from the list of known elements, only 17 are left to be classified as nonmetals.

Description: This informational program supports Chemistry units on the use of the Periodic Table, as it explains periodic law and the significance of the rows and columns of the periodic table, including how to relate the position of an element in the table to its atomic number and atomic mass.
Students' comprehension of the significance of the table will be reinforced as they learn how to use it to identify metals, semimetals, nonmetals and halogens, as well as the relative sizes of ions and atoms.
The program also outlines the physical and chemical qualities of the members of each group of elements from the alkaline metals to the noble gases.
