The seminal tract develops from the mesonephric duct which is a paired structure draining the mesonephric tubules in to the cloaca.
Most frequent obstructive malformation of the seminal tract is bilateral congenital absence of vas deferens.2 Almost all of these patients have bilaterally absent seminal vesicles and if present they are usually hypoplastic and non functional along with absence of ejaculatory ducts.
This study emphasized that absence of seminal fructose and low volume ejaculate in these patients may be due to agenesis of ejaculatory ducts rather than absence of seminal vesicles.5 However, in these two patients, seminal fluid examination had shown the presence of fructose indicating the presence of functioning seminal vesicles and patent ejaculatory ducts.

In contrast, in the undifferentiated TCDD-exposed seminal vesicles, PCNA immunoreactivity was at both the basal and luminal surfaces of poorly branched glands, indicative of the delayed development of the TCDD-treated organ.
In the seminal vesicles from TCDD-treated rats, it is unclear whether the increase in collagen is due to altered expression or simply a lack of distribution of the collagen due to the inhibition of epithelial branching.
In conclusion, in utero and lactational exposure to 1.0 mg/kg TCDD inhibits the proliferation and differentiation of the seminal vesicle epithelium.

Normal seminal vesicles are flat, paired structures that lie cephalad to the prostate behind the bladder and have a bow-tie appearance on transverse imaging.
Acquired seminal vesicle cysts generally result from infectious processes, and malignancies of the seminal vesicles are a rare cause of hematospermia.

That portion of the duct which continues distal to the seminal vesicle is known as the ejaculatory duct and is contained entirely within the prostate gland.
The seminal vesicle develops as an out-pocketing of the mesonephric duct, distal to the epididymis (Fig.
The seminal vesicle also produces several androgen-dependent secretory proteins that are involved in the rapid clotting of the ejaculate.

 Definition: Seminal Fluid
Seminal fluid is comprised of secretions produced by the prostate gland, Cowper’s gland and the seminal vesicles.
Seminal fluid that does not have an alkaline pH, a problem often associated with a low ejaculatory volume, usually indicates a problem with the seminal vesicle’s functionality.
Seminal fluid analysis is an important part of the semen analysis.

The internal male genitalia consist of the testes with the adjoining epididymis, the vas deferens and the accessory sex glands, namely the seminal vesicles, the prostrate and the bulbourethral glands (the latter sometimes are included in the external genitalia).
All the lumina visible in sections of the seminal vesicle are in continuity in the intact organ.
The secretion of the seminal vesicles is the third fraction of the ejaculate (the spermatozoa are released with the second fraction - the contents of the vas deferens).

Seminal vesicles were removed, homogenized in 1ml LBSS, using a glass homogenizer, washed 3 times in LBSS as above, and then spun in LBSS 2 min at 2000 rpm.
The presence of a few non-adherent coelomocytes could be due either to cells that were present on the exterior portion of the seminal vesicles (in contact with coelomic fluid), or to response- inhibitory factors within the seminal vesicles.

The Production Of Semen - The Seminal Apparatus
This, however, is not the case, as the two excretory ducts of the seminal vesicles, and especially their openings into the urethra, are so extremely fine, because really they are.
Because the two seminal vesicles are only laterally attached to their ducts it may happen (in contradistinction to the urinary apparatus, in which both the ureters discharge into the bladder itself), that sperm cells simply pass by the seminal vesicle without entering it.
And in the same way each time that the seminal vesicles with their occlusory muscles are stimulated, the erection thus occasioned immediately constricts the urethra to such an extent that the voiding of urine is almost impossible.

 Genitourinary Case Report 8
Unilateral agenesis of the seminal vesicles is thought to result from an embryologic insult before separation of the ureteral bud from the mesonephric ducts, which usually occurs during the 7th week of gestation.
Unilateral agenesis is frequently associated with ipsilateral agenesis of the ductus deferens and with renal agenesis--79% of patients with absence of a seminal vesicle have ipsilateral renal agenesis, 12% had ipsilateral renal abnormalities, and only 9% had normal kidneys bilaterally.
Detection of congenital seminal vesicle abnormalities warrants evaluation of the remainder of the genitourinary tract.

Andrology Australia - Absence of Vas Deferens & Seminal Vesicles
The prostate and seminal vesicles provide about 90 per cent of the fluid in the ejaculate, so absence of the seminal vesicles can cause a smaller amount of ejaculate (usually about 0.5 ml, normal men > 2 ml).
The seminal vesicles also contribute to making the ejaculate alkaline, so when they are absent the acidity of the ejaculate is increased.
When the vas deferens and seminal vesicles are missing, it is usually possible to collect sperm directly from the testis or from the small remaining part of the epididymis and achieve pregnancies using assisted reproductive technologies.

In secondary spread from the prostate, early involvement of seminal vesicles is indicated by thickening of the tubal walls as seen on MRI.
We believe recognition of changes in signal intensity of the seminal vesicles is a more sensitive indicator of primary tumour than changes in their size similar to what is described for secondary invasion of seminal vesicles from prostate[5].

Transrectal ultrasonography is ideally suited now for evaluation of the prostate, seminal vesicles and ejaculatory ducts in patients with azoospermia or low ejaculate volumes.
Although vasography has been used to visualize the seminal vesicles and ejaculatory ducts, transrectal ultrasonography is accurate, inexpensive and relatively non-invasive.
This includes congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens, bilateral ejaculatory duct obstruction not corrected by transurethral surgery, obstructive azoospermia secondary to surgical removal of the vasal ampullae and seminal vesicles during cystoprostatectomy or radical prostatectomy, failed vasoepididymostomy where the prognosis for redo surgery is poor.

The indications for seminal vesiculectomy (surgical removal of seminal vesicle) are limited to very unusual and specific cases of infertility or chronic infection.
In the FEW patients in whom it may be indicated however, there is justifiable reluctance to proceed due to the difficulty of the standard surgical approach (which often involves division of the bladder neck or prostate) and the high complication rate.
It is done through a lower abdominal incision (called a "Gibson", which incidentally is the incision I use for a kidney transplant) and leaves the bladder and prostate untouched.
