Sertoli cell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Transverse section of a tubule of the testis of a rat.
A Sertoli cell (a kind of sustentacular cell) is a 'nurse' cell of the testes which is part of a seminiferous tubule.
The junctions of Sertoli cells form the blood-testis barrier, a structure that partitions the interstitial blood compartment of the testis from the adluminal compartment of the seminiferous tubules.

The wall of the seminiferous tubule (a) is composed of myoid cells, fibroblasts, and fibromuscular connective tissue.
The stratified seminiferous epithelium is separated from the wall by a basal membrane.
Spermatogonia (b) and Sertoli cells (arrow) lie on the basal membrane, and are in the basal compartment.

 Altweb: Mechanisms of Toxicity
After waiting 16 - 24 hours for seminiferous tubule fluid to accumulate, the animal is killed, and the testes are removed and weighed; the increased weight of the ligated testis compared to the unligated testis reflects the accumulation of seminiferous tubule fluid.
Using the lumenal oil droplet method, a statistically significant decrease in seminiferous tubule fluid secretion was observed after 3 weeks of 2,5-hexanedione exposure while 4 weeks of exposure was required before a decrease was observed by efferent duct ligation.
Exposure to microtubule disrupters which are known testicular toxicants consistently results in decreased seminiferous tubule fluid secretion and germ cell loss, indicating that Sertoli cell microtubules are critical to normal testicular homeostasis.

Seminiferous tubules - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Semeniferous tubules visible in center, but not labeled.)
Seminiferous tubules are located in the testicles, and are the specific location of meiosis, and the subsequent creation of gametes, namely sperm.
The epithelium of the tubule consists of sustentacular or Sertoli cells, which are tall, columnar type cells that line the tubule.

Spermatogonia, spermatocytes and spermatids of 40 cross-sections through the seminiferous tubules were counted for each animal from both experimental and control groups (a total of 640), with identical diameter of the tubules (determined by eyepiece micrometer) in phase VII, according to the classification of Leblond and Clermon (1952).
Using light microscopy, the thickening of the layer of the spermatogenesis cells was observed in the cross-sections of the seminiferous tubules and a narrowing of their lumen in the treated animals.
The number of spermatogonia in one seminiferous tubule in the control animals was 36 (between 36 and 40 spermatogonia per tubule).

 MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
Primate seminiferous epithelium is a mosaic of different associations of stages of germ cells, each occupying a small area of seminiferous tubule.
The "wall" (boundary tissue) of a seminiferous tubule includes not only the basal lamina of the epithelium (hard to distinguish here) but also collagen fibers and several layers of somewhat elongated cells, the myoid cells (myoid cells are contractile and can also be seen on slide b-31).
In addition to the testis seminiferous tubules, this section contains the caput (head) of the epididymis including both the efferent ductules and the caput of the ductus epididymis.

Endotext.com - Endocrinology Of Male Reproduction, Endocrinology of the Male Reproductive System
External to the basement membrane of the seminiferous tubule, there are several layers of modified myofibroblastic cells termed myoid cells(46,47).
These cellular layers are responsible for the irregular contractions of the seminiferous tubules which propel fluid secreted by the Sertoli cells, together with testicular spermatids into the lumen and through the tubular network to the region of the rete testis.
The data indicate that the metabolic activity of the Sertoli cell is influenced by the populations of germ cells that are found at a particular stage of the seminiferous cycle (69-71).

NEL, Quantitative study on the effects of chronic ethanol administration on the testis pii:NEL220201A03
RESULTS: The 3H-thymidine autoradigraphic investigation revealed that there was a significant inhibition in the proliferative activity of the spermatogonia in all stages of the seminiferous tubule cycle in the alcohol-treated rats versus controls as indicated by the values of 3H-labelling indices.
The histological and numerical investigations indicated that the alcohol-treated rats presented testicular lesions including a significant decrease in the diameter of the seminiferous tubules, the number of different germ cells in all stages of the seminiferous tubule cycle and the presence of degenerative germ cells.
These effects may be due to the effect of alcohol on the gonadotrophic cells of the pituitary gland and/or directly on the seminiferous tubules and Leydig cells.
