The state tree is the Southern live oak (Quercus virginiana), the state bird is the brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum), and the state flower is the cherokee rose (Rosa laevigata).
In December 1864, a large swath of the state was destroyed during General William Tecumseh Sherman's March to the Sea.
The state is an important producer of cotton, tobacco, and forest products, notably the so-called "naval stores" such as turpentine and rosin from the pine forests.

One special feature of the park is a tropical hammock dominated by trees that are characteristic of coastal forests of the West Indies and Yucatan.
Also found in the park are cypress swamps, salt marshes and pine flatwoods which further add to the park's botanical diversity.
The official state animal, the Florida panther, and the official state marine mammal, the West Indian manatee, may also be seen occasionally.

Located 16 miles south of Donalsonville, Seminole State Park is a 343 acre park which offers camping, hiking, canoeing, picnicking, fishing, boating and water skiing.
Park guests may fish in these areas until 10:00 P.M. Fishermen may launch boats at the three boat ramps located in the park.
The park will assign campsites a week before arrival according to the order in which the reservations were made and according to the site type.

GOODLAND — When we arrived at Collier-Seminole State Park just after sunset on a chilly Friday in mid-February, I began to wonder whether visiting this park during the peak of the winter season was a good idea.
Smith loves the park, established by Collier County as a memorial pioneer developer Barron Collier and donated to the state in 1944, because it remains so natural.
Park Manager Joe Howard said anglers also catch redfish, spotted sea trout, grouper and tarpon in the Blackwater River near the park.

The six-mile loop trail at Collier-Seminole State Park is the most tropical backpacking outing in the United States, where a tangle of jungle presses up against the Big Cypress Swamp.
The tallest royal palms in the state grow here—in fact, the tallest royal palm in the world is said to grow along this trail—and thousands of exotic trees and shrubs densely populate the tropical hammocks.
The trail is on the opposite side of U.S. 41 from the park entrance, 0.7 miles south, with a parking area behind the locked gate.

I can never understand why a park with over 6,000 acres insists on putting all of the campsites in only one of them, with about a foot and a half between tents.
The Mexican restaurant near the entrance to the park is also one of the best in the state.
Unlike the big screen, multi-media events at the National Parks, (remember Ranger Clay and the tree snails?) the state park presentations are decidedly homey.

The Battle of Royal Palm Hammock, which was fought by Miccosukee and Seminole Indians versus U.S. Army soldiers is reenacted on or near the spot of its historic location at the Collier-Seminole State Park, during the Native American and Pioneer Festival on Sunday.
Ralph Smith, an assistant park manager at Collier-Seminole and a descendant of fl Seminoles, noted how the Battle of Royal Palm Hammock had a similar ending—in favor of the Seminoles—to many encounters between natives and U.S. soldiers during the Third Seminole War, which was fought to remove all remaining Seminoles to the Arkansas Territory.
Led by the cocky and defiant Chief Billy Bowlegs, the Seminoles fought hard to retain their reservation lands in the fertile Everglades which was given to them by the U.S. government after the Second Seminole War.

Has anyone stayed at Seminole State Park in Donalsonville, GA? We are passing through and staying 2 nights to see friends before we head to Topsail Hill.
The park was very clean and the staff very helpful.
Some of the state parks on lakes are designed for boating, but this park was not.

In the Withlacoochee State Forest (south of highway 50) in Hernando County, only Tillandsia bartramii (small form), T. usneoides, and T. recurvata were seen on 5 March, and none of these grows large enough to support development of M.
The weevil was not found within the Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve on 30 March, the Big Cypress National Preserve (from the Oasis Visitor Center to a point about 6.5 miles north on the Florida Trail) on 31 March, nor the Collier-Seminole State Park on 1 April.
It was not observed at Highlands Hammock State Park, although it was found in the park in 1999.
