	Seminole
		The fourth Seminole was built in 1944 under a Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 1703), by the North Carolina Shipbuilding Co., Wilmington, N.C.; launched on 28 December 1944; sponsored by Miss Pamela Cole; commissioned on 8 March 1945 at the Charleston (S.C.) Navy Yard, Lt. Comdr.
		Seminole transited the Panama Canal on 14 to 15 April and arrived at Pearl Harbor on the 30th.
		Seminole participated in Operation “Beaver Cage,” an amphibious and helicopter borne assault in support of the 1st Marine Division from 28 April to 13 May. Planning commenced immediately for operation "Beau Charger," an amphibious and helicopter assault for a search and destroy operation near the DMZ.

	Seminole Nation, Indian Territory History & Genealogy
		The Seminole are classified among the Muskogean peoples, a group of remnant tribes having joined in forming this division in Florida during the border wars between the Spanish and the English colonists on the Florida-Carolina frontier in the 18th century.
		In 1817, with the accusation that the Seminole were harboring runaway slaves, Andrew Jackson commanded nearly 3,000 troops to attack and burn the town of Mikasuki, starting the first Seminole War.
		By 1849 the Seminole settlements were located in the valley of the Deep Fork south to the Canadian in what is now the western part of Okfuskee and Hughes counties, and neighboring parts of Seminole County.

		The three Seminole Wars that commanded the attention and manpower of the U.S. Army and Navy during the antebellum period intensified the violence and chaos that had been characteristic of the Georgia-Florida frontier since the early colonial period.
		The engagements that took place between American troops and the Seminoles in Georgia, particularly during the First (1817-18) and Second (1835-42) Seminole Wars, were pivotal moments that crystallized some of the major issues underlying the battles.
		The antebellum period Seminoles were a confederacy of multiple clans that had splintered from various southwestern tribes (Lower Creek, Oconee, Yuchi, Alabama, Choctaw, and Shawnee) and drifted into southern Georgia and northern Florida in the early 1700s.

		The Seminole tribe developed in the 18th century from members of the Creek Confederacy, mostly Creeks and Hitchiti, who raided and eventually settled in Florida, which was then Spanish territory.

		The First Seminole War (1817-1818) was precipitated when a Seminole chief named Neamathla warned U.S. troops not to trespass on their hunting grounds.

		Seminole Indians always claimed Blacks as slaves, or family members, consequently slave catchers would capture any Black and claim he was a runaway.
		All of the Seminole leaders in Florida were present, some having traveled for days and hundreds of miles with their families and escorts for this all important meeting.
		The treaty required that the Seminoles sell all properties to the U.S. and remove to the west as all of the south and southeastern tribes had previously done, and that Blacks be returned to their "rightful" owners.
