The pale brown plumage of their upper parts is similar to that of the Piping Plover, but much lighter than other closely related species like the Wilson's Plover and Semipalmated Plover.
In North America, the Snowy Plover is found along the west coast from Washington to Baja California and along the Gulf coast from Florida to the Yucatan Peninsula.
Studies have found declines in Snowy Plover populations along the U.S. Gulf Coast, in the Great Plains and along the westernmost part of its U.S. range where there was an estimated 20% decline in breeding birds from the late 1970's to the late 1980's.

Brynjúlfur Brynjólfsson and Sigmundur Ásgeirsson did not really expect to find a new bird for Iceland, on an evening tour on the Reykjanes peninsula (SW Iceland) on 7 May 2004, where the target bird was Manx Shearwater which is regular off several seawatching points.
When having a quick look at Sandgerði, they soon stopped on a 'ringed plover' type, which was clearly smaller than the surrounding Ringed Plovers Charadrius hiaticula.
It is thought that this bird is in its first summer, because of the immature looking plumage, although litterature states that first-summer birds are distinguished from adults by the very worn primaries (!).

Remarks This plover frequents sandy beaches and mudflats during migration and, although it mixes to some extent with swarms of its many relatives, it shows an inclination to remain aloof, particularly at high tide when it is resting on beaches.
Two colloquial names for this shorebird are "ox-eye" and "ring-neck" It can be readily identified by the single fl band (brown in young birds) across an otherwise pure white breast.
The Piping Plover is much like the Semipalmated Plover in size and plumage pattern but is much paler.
