Semiramide, a strong and melodious work, is one of Rossini's greatest dramatic operas, offering a fine challenge to the superb contralto and soprano bel canto singing of Ms.
I also have a video of the Aix-en-Provence "Semiramide," but the tenor was terrible and the costumes were atrocious--almost everyone was dressed up to look like chunks of ancient Assyrian architecture (perhaps because the soprano resembled a chunk of ancient Assyrian architecture, even without a costume).
Semiramide decides to marry Arsace, although he already has a girlfriend (somehow, she doesn't recognize her own son).

Though it is not widely known today, the legend of Semiramis (Semiramide) was wildly popular as a subject for literature, the visual arts and the operatic stage up to the end of the 19th century.
In his story, Semiramide becomes an Egyptian princess (a variant Metastasio himself acknowledges in his introductory notes), who after an ill-fated affair with an Indian prince (styling himself under the name "Idreno") that resulted in her being stabbed and left for dead, makes her way to Assyria and marries the king.
Semiramide proved successful in the theater up to the end of the 19th century and was truly the first grand opéra, one to which successive generations of French and Italian composers would turn for inspiration.

Semiramide was composed in Venice in January of 1823, and was first produced on February 3, at the Venetian theater La Fenice.
Semiramide met with moderate success in its first run, however, and is still one of the works that still lurk on the outskirts of the standard operatic repertory today.
In the libretto used by Rossini (which is at least partly based on an earlier stage play by Voltaire), Semiramide conspires with her lover Assur to murder her husband Nino and place Assur on the throne.

Sutherland's Semiramide is a tad maternal in her character, but the singing makes up for any shortcomings there, while Horne is clearly having the time of her life as the warrior Arsace.
Joan Sutherland as Semiramide and Marilyn Horne in a "trouser role" as the armed forces captain/long lost son Arsace is an excellent pairing for this opera.
This is possibly the best Semiramide set to own if you are looking for magnificent, virtuostic Rossini singing from two of the world's great divas of the past.
