Diaphragm (anatomy) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the anatomy of mammals, the diaphragm is a shelf of muscle extending across the bottom of the ribcage.
The central tendon of the diaphragm is a thin but strong aponeurosis situated near the center of the vault formed by the muscle, but somewhat closer to the front than to the back of the thorax, so that the posterior muscular fibers are the longer.
The sternal portion of the muscle is sometimes wanting and more rarely defects occur in the lateral part of the central tendon or adjoining muscle fibers.

 Torticollis
In 15 cases we operated on the same muscles as in the first procedure, in 5 patients new muscles have to be denervated during the second procedure due to a progression of the dystonia.
Muscle relaxants were not given because the different nerve branches have to be identified by monopolar stimulation.
As this muscle sometimes may be innervated additionally by branches of the spinal roots Cl and C2 or by recurrent nerves, leaving the trapezius branch of the spinal accessory nerve, the procedure only is terminated by resecting these branches as well.

Chapter 40: Muscles, vessels, nerves and joints of the back
The vertical muscles on the posterior aspect of the neck are bandaged by the splenius muscles, which ascend obliquely from the thoracic spinous processes and insert into (1) the mastoid part of the temporal bone and the superior nuchal line (splenius capitis) and (2) the cervical transverse processes (splenius cervicis).
The semispinalis, so called because it extends chiefly along the upper half of the vertebral column, is responsible for the longitudinal bulges on the posterior side of the neck on either side of the median plane.
The chief flexors of the vertebral column are the prevertebral muscles, recti abdominis, iliopsoas, scaleni, and stemomastoids.

The deltoid muscle moves the humerus bone and is used to raise the arm outward from the side.
The muscles run upward and come together in the middle of their course (both pieces of the muscle lie side by side), but do not actually touch and are inserted in the front of the hyoid bone.
The rectus capitis muscles are small triangular muscles that extend from the cervical vertebrae and insert in the occipital bone at the base of the skull.

Muscles are generally located bilaterally, crossing the midline only rarely as in the case of skeletal muscles in the upper esophagus.
The semispinalis muscle pulls the head to the rear and counteracts the effects of gravity, which in general pulls the head forward.
The muscles on the front of the neck are inactive except for serving as antagonists to the muscles on the back of the neck, the hamstrings are not under stretch because the knees are fully bent, and the ankle extensors are passive.

The muscles extend from the spine to the edge of the scapula (shoulder blade).
The serratus posterior superior is a thin, flat, quadrilateral muscle that extends from the neck to the third, fourth, and fifth ribs.

The levels of the correlation between the MLD of the muscle measured in relaxation and the cervical extension force at 100 percent MVC was r = 0.73 (p = 0.09).
The simultaneous measurement of muscle force and muscle size can be of special importance in gaining a lucid understanding of the action of the muscles in such a complex structure as the cervical spine.

Treatment of vascular and tension headache atypical facial pain allergic rhinitis and cervical muscle hyperactivity - ...
Cervical muscle hyperactivity (spasm), is an extremely common condition with many causes, including tension, response to an inflamed or subluxed joint, arthritic changes, poor posture or work habits, trauma, systemic disease and adjacent pathology.
The relation between the condition of cervical muscle spasm and the previously described headaches and facial pain can be demonstrated by the fact that the headache and facial pain patients do not respond as well to treatment in the presence of significant cervical muscle spasm.
Because of the relative accessibility of the maxillary nerve plexus, it was possible to consistently demonstrate several elements of local sterile inflammation, i.e., (1) normal appearing tissue, (2) consistent tenderness in that area that was strongly related to symptoms, (3) increased temperature associated with area of tenderness, and (4) positive response to treatment with cold.

For those unaware as I was, what this manipulation does is causes the Semispinalis to become aggrevated at first, and perpetually aggrevated by the normal action of the shoulderblade to the point where the muscle will initially develop microtears and subsequently scar tissue there.
Since the nature of the Semispinalis Capitus is to primarily facilitate control of one's head laterally, this tear caused my head to twitch uncontrollably to the left for nearly six months until the tear and the rest of me could heal more or less.
As I understand now, when you move your eyes laterally from normally straight to the far left, this will usually "prompt" your semispinalis muscle to contract and move your head in the direction you are looking.
