Sempron - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sempron is, as of 2006, AMD's entry level desktop CPU, replacing the Duron processor and competing against Intel's Celeron D processor.
The first Sempron CPUs were based on the Athlon XP architecture using the Thoroughbred/Thorton core.
Later, AMD introduced the Sempron 3000+ CPU, based on the Barton core (512 KiB L2-cache.) From a hardware and user standpoint, the Socket-A Sempron CPUs were essentially renamed Athlon-XP desktop CPUs.

 TrustedReviews - AMD Sempron 3100+
The Sempron 3100+ does however lack 64bit support, so don’t expect to be able to run 64bit Windows XP on it when it arrives.
First of all, let’s clarify a few things; the Sempron 3100+ is only available for Socket-754 and not the newer Socket-939, which seems strange, especially when you consider that AMD will move all its Athlon 64s to the new platform.
A wild guess would be that the Sempron would perform better with dual channel memory and AMD is trying to prevent it from competing with the Athlon 64.

Welcome to AnandTech.com [ Article: AMD Sempron: A Fresh Take on Budget Computing]
Also, the A64 2800+ and Sempron 3100+ are performing on par in these test, as are the AXP 2600+ and Sempron 2800+ (as we thought they would).
As clock speed ramps on Sempron and x86-64 becomes a bigger deal, we may see some separation in the ranks, but, until then, the Sempron 3100+ is a solid choice for anyone looking for a budget AMD setup with better performance and upgrade-ability than the Socket A platform.
The Sempron 2200+ paired with a very barebones board will help bring extraordinarily cheap computing to anyone who wants it, and we look forward to seeing how much of an improvement it is to the current Duron and Athlon offerings at the 1.5GHz clock speed.

AMD's Sempron value processors to arrive in Q3 | InfoWorld | News | 2004-07-28 | By Tom Krazit, IDG News Service
Sempron is designed to provide a little more performance than some of AMD's older value processors, but at prices that will keep basic PC costs as low as possible, he said.
Just like Celeron D, Sempron chips are virtually the same as their full-featured counterparts, but come with less cache for storing frequently accessed data close to the processor.
Six of the new Sempron desktop chips are based on the seventh-generation Athlon XP core and one is based on the eighth-generation technology.

 AMD's Sempron 2800+ and 3100+ processors - The Tech Report - Page 1
The majority of Semprons, right now, are renamed Athlon XP processors with new model numbers and a slightly different mix of clock and bus speeds.
The Sempron 2800+ pictured above runs at 2GHz, and AMD intends it as a competitor for the Celeron D model 335, whose clock speed is 2.8GHz.
The Socket A Semprons will stretch down to the 2400+ model running at 1.67GHz, but don't think the future of the Sempron is in Socket A. Already, AMD is defining the Sempron's future path by introducing a K8-derived Sempron, the 3100+, that slips into Socket 754 motherboards, just like most Athlon 64 processors.

 Techware Labs - Reviews - AMD Sempron 2800+ & 3100+
Essentially, the Sempron is an Athlon XP with half the cache, which runs at lower temperatures and higher clock frequencies.
An additional 128k of cache for the Sempron will affect benchmarks differently than would adding 128k of cache on the Celeron 2.8 or 2.6 "D." The difference is because of the way the to processors handle the cache.
On the flip side are the Athlon XP and Sempron processors, which use the exclusive caching principle.

 Driverheaven: AMD Sempron 2800+
The Sempron is basically an AthlonXP “Thoroughbred”; chip re-badged, this means that it has slightly lower performance than the Athlon XP Barton (Caused mainly by the lesser cache on the Sempron - 256k level 2 cache vs. 512k on the Barton).
AMD have based their Sempron model numbers on the performance of the chip in several benchmarks when compared to other Sempron processors.
The Sempron FSB is running at 166MHz (333 MHz effective) as the Thoroughbred also did and really, that’s all you need to know about the CPU.

AMD to saddle up Sempron on Wednesday | CNET News.com
The chipmaker, which created the Sempron brand earlier this summer with the low-price PC market in mind, will begin offering a dozen Semprons, including eight processor models for desktops and four models for notebooks, on Wednesday.
The two lowest-priced desktop Sempron models, the $39 2200+ and $45 2300+, will be reserved for emerging markets where they will replace the AMD Duron chip, Morris said.
All of the Sempron chips will run at slower clock speeds and have less cache--a pool of memory that holds data close to the processor core to boost performance--than Athlon XP or mobile Athlon 64 chips, a common method of curbing performance and differentiating them from their upmarket siblings.

 AMD Marches on Sempron
The Mobile AMD Sempron processors 2600+ and 2800+ designed for thin and light notebooks are $107 and $134, respectively.
Sempron essentially replaces AMD's previous discount Duron family and trades it in for what AMD calls "mature markets." The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company recently told internetnews.com it is still producing Duron cores to satisfy market needs in emerging countries like China and Latin America.
Mobile AMD Sempron processors 2600+, 2800+, and 3000+ are designed for full-size notebooks and Mobile AMD Sempron processors 2600+ and 2800+ designed for thin and light notebooks will be available in August 2004.

AMD Sempron desktop CPU | The Register
That said, since Sempron is going head to head with Intel's Celeron processors it's not hard to see why AMD has taken this route as the fastest Celeron D, the 335, is only clocked at 2.8GHz.
However, the Sempron is a completely different animal to the Duron as the Socket A variety runs at 333MHz bus speed and features 256KB L2 cache memory - the same amount as the previous generations of Athlon XP processors.
There is, however, one Sempron chip that we haven't touched on yet and that's the 3100+ which doesn't have anything in common with the others apart from its name.

AMD Plans 64-Bit Sempron Processors - News by InformationWeek
Jun 9, 2005 03:51 PM AMD is planning a 64-bit version of its Sempron processor, presaging a down-market duel in which the scrappy semiconductor vendor will battle Intel's upcoming 64-bit Celeron D for control of the so-called "value-priced" market segment, where PCs can sell for as little as $300.
For example, AMD first teased the availability of 64-bit Semprons in April, when Marty Seyer, vice president and general manager of AMD's microprocessor business unit, told TechWeb that the processors would be forthcoming, but declined to say exactly when.
Moving forward, analyst Feibus believes that neither the Sempron nor the Celeron D will be able to rely much on its 64-bit abilities to make its way in the market.

The performance numbers also indicate that the Sempron processors are significantly better than Intel's Celeron line.
