The St. Petersburg Times - Arts + Features - photos capture the uncapturable
Semyonov's fl-and-white photographs - which are reflective in more than one sense of the word - preserve something of the city's legendarily transient, ungraspable nature.
"Semyonov's evocative photos are taken from the perspective of a native of the city who is enamoured with the city's architectural details, but not with the familiar monuments," said Yevgenia Zimnyukhova, of the SWASH Foundation for Cultural programs, which is organizing the exhibition with the Washington-based Swashbuckler Enterprises.
Semyonov often takes advantage of St. Petersburg's prodigious precipitation to photograph his targets indirectly, reflected in the city's myriad of puddles, canals and rivers.

Nabil Khattab: Ethnicity, Class and the Earning Inequality in Israel, 1983-1995
For instance, in terms of income, Lewin-Epstein and Semyonov (1992) have found that Jews earn much higher incomes than Palestinian workers, as a result of different opportunity structures faced by Jews and Arabs, in which the latter are more likely to be employed in far less desirable and lower-paid jobs.
This finding is consistent with a study conducted by Lewin-Epstein and Semyonov a decade ago in which they concluded that "earnings of Arabs (as compared to Jews) are more dependent on the characteristics of the local labor market and less on resources of individuals" (1992: 1115).
