The street lined with rows of zelkova trees which extends westward from JR Sendai Station, is Aoba-dori Street, the main street of Sendai, which is known as "The City of Trees".
The Tanabata-matsuri Festival is based on the Chinese seventh of July legend in which the Kengyu(a cowherd), the star Altair and the Orihime(a weaver), the star Vega appear on either side of the Milky Way and the cross the bridge of magpie's wings to the Milky Way to meet once a year.

The magnitude-7.2 quake, centered about 50 miles off the coast of Miyagi state, knocked out power to about 17,000 homes, while high-speed train service was suspended in northern Japan and flights were grounded temporarily at Haneda airport in Tokyo, 185 miles to the south.
By nightfall, trains in Sendai were up and running again, although hundreds of stranded passengers crowded the central train station.
