Population of Seneca in 1830, 5,157; 1840, 18,139; 1860, 30,868; 1880, 36,945; of whom 26.947 were born in Ohio; 3,154, Pennsylvania; 905, New York; 350, Virginia; 214, Indiana; 27, Kentucky; 2,402, German Empire; 339, Ireland; 159, France; 141, England and Wales; 131, British America; 11, Scotland; and 6, Sweden and Norway.
Another mentionable fact connected with the personalities of this county, is that about a quarter of a century since, when that noted French divine, PERE HYACINTHE, left the bosom of mother church and advocated matrimony for priests, he proceeded to practice as he had preached and took for his bride a Seneca county lady.

In 1969, it was purchased by the county for a recreational area.

Carl Amonson was born in Seneca, Crawford County, Wisconsin, on April 19, 1865, the son of Ammon and Petrena (Knudson) Amonson, natives of Norway.
The father came to the United States in 1857, kept hotel in Lacrosse, Wisconsin, until 1865, then farmed in Crawford County until 1883, then moved to Bridgewater, South Dakota, where he is a heavy real estate owner now.
Amonson is not satisfied with his attainments but is constantly devoting himself to hard study of the basic sciences treating of the earth, its formation, of mining and mineralogy and he is especially studying the Coeur d'Alene district and intends to devote himself to a continued operation here.

The first plat or survey in the county was undoubtedly made by Paul D. Butler, for himself and Armstrong, in 1817 or 1818, so that Spencer, or Vance, or Hedges, cannot claim the honors of the first town survey in the county.
The first schoolhouse erected at Seneca county seat was that old landmark which stood at the northwest corner of Market and Monroe Streets, on land donated by Josiah Hedges in 1828.
The Seneca County Academy claimed seventy-five pupils in the winter of 1846, and may be classed as the beginning of "higher education" in Seneca County.

At that time the wilderness of the county was unbroken save but by the well-worn Indian trails which led from the four lakes at Madison to Lake Koshkonong, which, a few years previous, had been the camping-ground of the famous Indian chief Black Hawk.
Y., in 1831, and came to Wisconsin in 1844 and located on a farm in the town of Ixonia, Jefferson Co., which was his home till 1853 or ’54, when he removed to the town of Ashippun, Dodge Co., and engaged in farming there till 1874, when he came to Oconomowoc,.
His second marriage was in 1859, to Sarah A. Halverson, a native of Norway, and came to Wisconsin in 1849; their children are Isabella A., now in Evanston, Ill. Nicholas H.; Paulina F.; Nelson I. and Betsy A. Two of his sons are members of the Lutheran Church, the rest attend the Methodist.

Horne settled in Genesee, 1852, building the first, large frame house in the village, then known as “the house with the green blinds,” and which, with its recent improvements, is a most pleasant home; Messrs.
Hasler, a mile west of the village; he began as one of the pioneer physicians of Wisconsin, was provided with all needed instruments, though his drugs, etc., came from Milwaukee; Dr. Wright, of Waukesha, and himself, were then the only physicians in Waukesha County.
Steel is a Spiritualist in religious belief, and liberal in politics; served one year, and has since refused all office; suffice it to say that he has, during his thirty-seven years’ residence here, had all the practice he has desired, and, though not seeking it, still continues to minister to the afflictions of his fellow-men.
