Jane Jennings was the third of twelve children raised on a farm in rural Wisconsin.
At the end of the brief war, she sailed on the Seneca with convalescing soldiers, and two physicians, one of whom was also ill. At the end of the difficult trip, The grateful soldiers presented her with a scroll and called her the "Angel of the Seneca."

On June 10, 1919, Wisconsin became the first state to ratify the 19th amendment granting national suffrage to women.
From 1846 to 1919, different groups of women’s rights supporters had focused much of their energy on winning the vote, though each pursued different strategies.
Although Wisconsin had not been completely unenlightened in its approach to women’s legal rights (the rejected 1846 constitution would have given married women property rights), neither had it been on the forefront of the cause.

Pine Isle has about one thousand acres; is a low level piece of land under no cultivation; takes its name from a few Sturgeon pines growing thereon; some two or three large cranberry marshes; there is but one family living on it; cranberries the staple production.
A branch of White River marsh divides this island from Seneca Isle, which contains some fifteen hundred acres, a portion of which is under cultivation; soil sandy loam, oak openings interspersed sparingly with hickory; considered fair quality of land; timber lands along its western borders.
C. Butterfield's History of Wisconsin indicates that "the territory was part of Marquette county until May 12, 1858, at which date is was by an act of the legislature separately organized under the name of Green Lake county." Berlin was made the first county seat, followed by Dartford in 1862.
