The Senecas, Mohawks, and Onondagas are the Elder Brothers of the Iroquois Confederacy and have reciprocal relationships within league councils with the Oneidas and Cayugas, the Younger Brothers.
The Senecas were invaded unsuccessfully by a French force under the command of Joseph-Antoine Le Febvre de La Barre in 1684, and successfully in July 1687 by another led by Jacques René de Brisay, marquis de Denonville, which resulted in the burning of Seneca villages and cornfields.

A mortgage plan is crucial to getting Senecas into homes, Armstrong said, since banks traditionally deny loans to reservation dwellers because they cannot foreclose on land set aside for the nation in a 1794 treaty.
To that end, the Senecas are stepping up efforts to preserve their language and culture, including opening the "total immersion" Faithkeeper's School, at which students use their Seneca names, cook traditional foods and learn ceremonial addresses in the native language.
