King's American Dispensatory, 1898: Senecio   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
—Senecio is diuretic, pectoral, diaphoretic, tonic, and exerts a peculiar influence upon the reproductive organs, and particularly of the female, which has given to it, especially the S.
Senecio is of value in many genital disorders of the male, the indications being pelvic weight and full, tardy, or difficult urination and sensation of dragging in the testicles.
Among these varieties, the Senecio gracilis is considered the most efficient in uterine difficulties, and it is from this that the oleoresin, improperly called senecin, was at first prepared.

Senecio macroglossus belongs in the Asteraceae (daisy family) whereas ivy, Hedera helix, belongs in the Araliaceae (ivy family), along with Cussonia species, the cabbage trees, and Schefflera.
Senecio macroglossus is found on the eastern coast of South Africa from around Knysna in the Western Cape through East London in the Eastern Cape and further north into Lesotho and the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, where it is commonly found growing in forest and thicket margins.
Senecio macroglossus is not as fast growing as its relative Senecio tamoides, the canary creeper, and it is much neater and longer lived.

Senecio   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The Senecio species have a wide overlapping geographical range in which they grow, but are selective in their habitats, some preferring high altitude, subalpine, moist conditions, while others prefer dry, rocky, sandy soils at lower elevations.
However, recognition of a plant as a member of the genus Senecio can be based on the presence of a single layer of touching, but not overlapping, greenish bracts surrounding the flower head.
Senecio species have alternate leaves that are generally lanceolate to ovate, dentate, and often irregularly and deeply pinnately divided.

Senecio elegans, the veld cineraria, is an annual and occurs naturally on the coastal sands from Saldanha on the west coast to Port Elizabeth on the east coast.
The name Senecio is derived from the Latin senex, which means old man, and refers to the whitish grey hairy pappus that is reminiscent of the hair or beard of an old man. In composite (daisy) flowers, the pappus replaces the calyx, both in the inner disc florets and the outer ray florets.

Senecio elegans may be a bit weedy by some gardener’s standards, but planted densely in large groups they offer a great reward for very little effort.
For a striking show Senecio elegans can be planted in a mix with the orange or yellow annual Ursinia cakilefolia or Oncosiphon grandiflora, which grow to the same height.
Senecio elegans is sometimes confused with Senecio glastifolius, a tall perennial species with rougher leaves, which also makes an attractive garden plant..

 LUCIUS ALFENUS SENECIO
Alfenus Senecio succeeded Valerius Pudens as governor of Britain perhaps in 205, and certainly not later than 207.¹ It is possible that Senecio had some trouble with both the Maeatae and the Caledonii tribes of Scotland, reported by Dio in AD206/7.
It would seem that the Caledonii were stirred-up by Senecio's campaigns against their lowland neighbours, and retaliated with such force that the province itself was overrun, Roman towns plundered, and no-doubt, Roman civilian casualties.
The gubernatorial reports sent to Rome by Senecio were of such seriousness that the emperor was convinced the situation in Britain could only be restored through his personal intervention.
