Il Senesino ("the little Sienese", although he grew to imposing stature in his prime) was the stage name of the alto castrato Francesco Bernardi.
Senesino, born Francesco Bernardi in Siena, was skilled apparently at legato phrasings and downplayed heavy ornamentation.
Andreas Scholl's Arias for Senesino is a tribute to the castrato, Senesino, for whom Handel wrote the title role of Giulio Cesare.

 Ionarts: Andreas Scholl Conjures Senesino
Senesino was a celebrated alto castrato from Siena, and after singing for many years across Italy and Germany, Handel negotiated a contract for him to sing for the Royal Academy of Music in London, beginning with that company's second season in 1720.
His voice is well suited to the pieces composed for Senesino, whose range was rather narrow (up to D or E on the treble staff) and who, although capable of virtuosic melismatic passages, was reportedly strongest in long and sustained lines.
In 1720, Dresden dismissed Senesino for one of the many tirades associated with this difficult singer: he refused to sing an aria assigned to him and tore up a score.

Andreas Scholl - Arias for Senesino :: Stores Dir UK   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Arias from various stages of Senesino's career are represented here, though there is a major bias to the Handelian operas of the mid-1720s period - Rodelinda and Giulio Cesare.
Similarly, his mature interpretation of the scenes from Rodelinda and Giulio Cesare shows his experience of both roles in the theatre, and while the voice perhaps has lost a bit of that 'purity' in the highest notes, his attention to the text is absorbing.
Senesino's tessitura and Scholl's are the same, as far as we know, and all these pieces are tailor-made to show off both singers' talents.

Classical Net Review - Arias for Senesino
Senesino (whose real name was Carlo Broschi) is most famous for having premiered several of Handel's choicest operatic roles, including Bertarido in Rodelinda, and the title role in Giulio Cesare in Egitto.
This was in London, and audiences of the time were as interested in Senesino – both on and off the stage – as today's audiences are interested in Renée Fleming and Andrea Bocelli.
Senesino is supposed to have been a good actor.

Senesino is certainly best remembered as Handel’s star castrato during the 1720s and, after a short break during which Handel attempted to continue without him, the early 1730s.
Senesino’s fame as a dramatic singer with a particular talent for accompanied recitatives probably explains the selections of ‘Pompe vane di morte!
Lotti’s ‘Discordi pensieri’ is probably an aria that Handel heard Senesino performing when he visited Dresden in 1719, and its sweetly lyrical mood makes it easy to appreciate why Handel might have been impressed to engage Senesino for London at the earliest opportunity (the leader of Accademia Bizantina contributes a sweet violin solo).

Senesino | a bit of bonhomie
The renowned countertenor James Bowman and the London Handel Players led by Laurence Cummings, travelled to the villa that Senesino built and gave a wonderful concert, organised by the Friends of Musical Events in Tuscany.
Senesino was born Santi Francesco Bernardi in October 31st 1686 in Siena, the son of a barber.
I am so happy to find this information about Senesino, particularly the fact that his family still lives in Tuscany and apparently knows quite a bit about him that was never published in the few history books of the early eighteenth century.

 Senesino

‘Senesino: Farinelli’s Greatest Rival, Handel’s Muse’: Andreas Scholl, Accademia ...   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Obviously, a small orchestra such as the Accademia Bizantina would be used in an operatic performance, but it would be in the pit, not closely surrounding the singer, and for a recital, a ‘cello, keyboard and lute would provide the ideal partners.
According to Charles Burney, Senesino delivered Bertarido’s music ‘with uncommon energy and passion,’ both qualities strongly in evidence here, and Scholl’s phrasing, pacing and shaping of the recitative was masterly, the highly dramatic outbursts of ‘Pace al cener mio?’ delivered with a sense of barely suppressed rage.
Indeed, I had a problem with the orchestra throughout, but one which I have to say was clearly not shared by the rest of the audience.
