Sengkang is a sub-urban area in the north-eastern part of Singapore.
The Sengkang Planning Area, an urban planning zone under the Urban Redevelopment Authority, covers the Housing and Development Board satellite new town of Sengkang New Town and rural Jalan Kayu.
Before the Sengkang New Town was built, vegetable and pig farms were located in the area, dominated by tropical rainforest.

Sengkang Bus Interchange (Chinese: 盛港巴士转换站) is a bus interchange located on the ground storey of Compass Heights condominium in the town centre of Sengkang New Town.
Before then, the bus interchange was located across the road of Sengkang Square as a temporary bus interchange.
It is directly connected to Compass Point Shopping Centre, Sengkang MRT and LRT Stations which are in the same complex.

The Sengkang MRT/LRT Station (NE16/STC) is an interchange station that serves the urban planning area and new town of Sengkang.

Sengkang is a multishaft combined-cycle plant built around 2 site-rated 42.5MW GT8C gas turbines, two heat recovery steam generators and a steam turbine site-rated at 50MW.
Sengkang is currently the largest thermal power plant on the island and, under a power purchase agreement, electricity is supplied to the Sulawesi grid.

The Mitsubishi Crystal trains are quite nice, smooth rubber-wheeled automated guideway transit much in the style of Tokyo's Yurikamome line, and the little cars were packed today with sightseers doing the loop (if you're already on the MRT, it costs nothing to board the LRT, do the circuit, and come back!).
A little digging revealed that both Yurikamome and the Sengkang LRT were built by Mitsubishi (I thought the track looked awfully familiar!), here's some Mitsu propaganda in PDF form.

Some opening day impressions - not that much of a crowd as the initial opening a couple of years ago - back then when the Sengkang East Loop was only the second LRT system ever in Singapore, they were queuing up outside the station just to get in.
All in all, it's going to be a good thing for the residents of the remote south-western corners of Sengkang West, and for Punggol residents.
Sengkang is fairly developed especially in the eastern and central part (where I live), but the western part is another story (re: railway in the middle of nowhere).

A distinctive feature in Sengkang is its Integrated Development in the town centre, which has a Residential Condominium, a Shopping Centre, a Bus Terminal, an MRT and an LRT station together with its Operations Centre, all rolled into the same location.
But alas, such new-ness and sophistication are spoilt by Sengkang residents who practice the park-and-ride philosophy but do so indiscriminately.
How Sengkang residents can take the LTA or PRPTC seriously is beyond me. In fact, it looks like the residents are playing I-dare with the powers that be by blatantly disregarding the order right under their noses.

The one for Sengkang new town will open by mid-2005, while the other, for Punggol new town, is slated to be ready in 2008.
With the coming NE MRT line, I should be able to go to NE places which I had never been like Punggol, Hougang and Sengkang.
