The parish church of Senglea, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, was most probably built by architect Vittorio Cassar in 1580 as a monument to the Christian Victory after the Great Siege of 1565.
Senglea became a parish in 1581 and was consecrated on the 20th October 1743.
Pope Pius VI on the 21st May 1786 declared the church to be a "collegiata insignis", while Pope Benedict XV in 1921 honoured the church with the title of Basilica; after the crowning of the statue of the Virgin Mary on the 4th September 1921 the church became a sanctuary of the Virgin Mary.

This feast has assumed a special significance for Malta and its people and, in a particular way, for Senglea; a feast which is proudly observed by the Maltese communities abroad as it marks the raising of the Great Siege of 1565 and the Siege of 1940-43.
Senglea's strategic position at the centre of the Grand Harbour, Malta's most heavily bombed location during the Second World War, meant that its buildings were reduced to rubble and almost all the inhabitants had to seek refuge during the war at other parts of Malta.
Senglea, to date, has new blocks of buildings and new houses replacing and hiding the scars of war.
