Onin War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The war initiated the Sengoku jidai, "the Warring States period".
So the Warring States period (which is the Chinese term borrowed by the Japanese in calling this period "sengoku jidai"), really wasn't a "warring states" period at all, but a "warring warlords" period.
The cost for the individual daimyo was tremendous, and a century of conflict would so weaken the bulk of Japanese warlords, that the three great figures of Japanese unification, beginning with Oda Nobunaga, would find it easier to militarily assert a single, unified military government.

 Jidai Geki
The jidai geki, or period film is a unique film genre belonging to Japan that has remained the country's most enduring and defining style of film.
While the occasional "highbrow" jidai geki continued to be made, the '80s marked the first significant decline of the period film after it had reached its highest point in the '60s.
As of 2004, the jidai geki appears to to be continuing strong with Takeshi Kitano's remake of Zatoichi being being given a theatrical release in the US and with several high-profile period films on the horizon including Takashi Miike's Izo and Azumi 2.

InuYasha takes place in the Sengoku Jidai, approximately 1482-1558, also called the “Warlord Era,” or “Era of the Warring States.” The time period got its name from the constant civil wars that took place throughout Japan’s 15th and 16th-centuries.
In a 2001 interview with Animerica magazine, Takahashi gave her reason for setting the story of InuYasha during the Sengoku Jidai as because it was "relatively easier to draw out a ghost story from that time period...In the Sengoku Era, there was war, and lots of people died."
Additionally, the subtitle for the InuYasha anime series, Sengoku o-Togi Zoshi, is a reference to a specific kind of popular pulp stories written during this tumultuous period.
