Senior Senator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Senior Senator and Junior Senator are terms commonly used in the media to describe U.S. Senators.
Each U.S. state sends two senators to serve in the Senate; the longer (continuously) serving of the two is by convention referred to as the "senior" senator, and the other is referred to as the "junior" senator.
Greater seniority enables a Senator to choose a desk closer to the front of the Senate Chamber.

United States Senate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Senators serve for six-year terms that are staggered so elections are held for approximately one-third of the seats (a "class") every second year.
The senator from each state with the longer tenure is known as the "Senior Senator," and their counterpart is the "junior senator"; this convention, however, does not have any official significance.
The Senate meets in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. Like the House of Representatives, the Senate meets in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. At one end of the Chamber of the Senate is a dais from which the Presiding Officer (the Vice President or the President pro Tempore) presides.

Arlen Specter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He was chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence from 1995, when the Republicans gained control of the Senate, until 1997, when he became chairman of the Committee on Veterans Affairs.
Specter, through a feud with Senator Harry Reid on the floor of the Senate, his position as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee and his opposition to a new budget plan proposed by the Bush administration, has emerged as a nationally recognized figure from his previous, more taciturn role in the public eye.
Senator John Sununu shaved his head to show solidarity with Specter when he was undergoing chemotherapy and was temporarily bald.

Mary Landrieu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Landrieu was elected to the U.S. Senate in the presidential election year of 1996, defeating Woody Jenkins by 5,788 votes out of 1.7 million cast, the narrowest national result of the 33 races for the U.S. Senate and one of the closest election margins in Louisiana history.
With the departure of John Breaux from the Senate in December 2004, his seat being taken by David Vitter, Landrieu became Louisiana's senior senator.
On May 23, 2005, Landrieu was among the Gang of 14, the group of moderate senators who forged a compromise on the use of the judicial filibuster, thus blocking the Republican leadership's attempt to implement the so-called nuclear option over the organized filibustering by Senate Democrats of judicial nominees in the U.S. Senate.
