Reports confirm that the affected areas, Hawata, Mafaza, Wad Al Shaer in Gedaref State were inaccessible due to heavy flooding of the Rahad River.
In addition to State authorities, MSF Holland is conducting a public awareness campaign and assisting the affected communities and State Ministry of Health with drug and medical supplies.

Although the early rains were generally well distributed in time and space in the northern states, dry spells interspersed with intense showers resulted in a complex pattern of successes and failures in the southern states.
In the southern states, although Normalized Difference Vegetation Index images show better than average vegetation cover across the country, Mission ground truthing suggest a more complicated mosaic where location-specific problems, including drought-induced germination failure, storm disturbed pollination and fruiting, water-logged reduced yields and late floods washing away crops and stocks, were all noted.
The Northern Region, comprising Northern and Nile States, with populations of 593 000 and 913 000 respectively, is mostly located along the banks of the Rivers Nile and Atbara.

Pre-harvest data on area and yield were provided to the Mission by State Ministries of Agriculture and the various irrigation schemes for all cereal crops in all states in northern Sudan.
For various interventions in the drought affected States of Kordofan, Darfur and the Red Sea, an estimated 78 000 tonnes of cereals are required.
Sennar State compensated for a late start to the season with well distributed rainfall during the later months.

In the Eastern States (Kassala, Gedaref) and Central States (Sennar, Blue Nile) there was a dry spell during the month of September which affected most of the late sown crops.
The sorghum crop in some areas (Butana province in Gezira state, Dinder province in Sennar state and northern and western areas west of the Blue Nile in Damazin state) was badly affected by a severe shortage and poor distribution of rainfall.
Harvestable area comparisons are much more revealing, particularly in Sennar state where this season the harvestable area was estimated to have fallen to as low as 60 percent of the planted area and 6 percent down on last year's figure.

Kassala Province, Eastern State, was selected for the implementation of the project because it comprises areas that are vulnerable to food shortages and others that are not.
At the state and provincial level, nutritionists were trained by the central staff.

Another, Alwa, its capital at Soba in the vicinity of present-day Khartoum, was overwhelmed about 1500 by the Funj, fl Muslims of uncertain origin, who established a sultanate at Sennar.
During the 16th century, the Funj emerged as a powerful Islamic state, and Sennar became one of the great cultural centers of Islam.
