Sense and Sensibility - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sense and Sensibility is a novel by Jane Austen that was first published in 1811.
The hugely successful 1995 film Sense and Sensibility starred Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet as the sisters, and was directed by Ang Lee.
In 1811, Sense and Sensibility was the first published novel of the English author Jane Austen (1775–1817).

 Sense and Sensibility 1995
Sense and Sensibility was the author's first published work and, as is often the case with early writing efforts, displays an undeniable shallowness: themes are half- developed, characterisation is uneven, and plotting follows a predictable straight-forwardness.
Sense and Sensibility is a wonderful motion picture, even given the weaknesses of the source material.
The novel's flaws guarantee that Sense and Sensibility cannot be a perfect motion picture, but it would be difficult, I think, to do much better with the material than Emma Thompson and director Ang Lee have here.

Sense and Sensibility tells the story of the two eldest daughters of Mrs Dashwood – brought up to be young ladies in comfortable circumstances but now reduced to poverty.
Marianne Dashwood is full of “sensibility” allowing herself to be ruled by her feelings and caring little for the feelings of others.
Sense and Sensibility opens on 4 November 2005 and continues until 17 December at The Genesian Theatre, 420 Kent Street, Sydney.

"Sense and Sensibility" was the first and one of the least of Jane Austen's novels; she wrote it in 1795, but it was not published for 16 years, until she had found the courage to declare herself as a novelist.
"Sense and Sensibility" has been directed by Ang Lee ("The Wedding Banquet," "Eat Drink Man Woman"), who is from Taiwan, and whose choice for this assignment has been questioned.
"Sense and Sensibility" is entertaining and amusing, but "Persuasion" is the one true Jane Austen lovers will prefer.

Sense and Sensibility is a charming book, but also a maddening one.
Lee appears so intent on keeping Sense and Sensibility from becoming a petrified monument that it moves like a kind of machine: the plot seems to be driven by gears, and sometimes they creak.
Her lips are moving, but you hear only a shiver of a whisper, and suddenly you're tipped off both to the character's cautiousness and to the vast well of feeling she keeps hidden inside: only the horse can know her secrets for sure.

Sense and Sensibility (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jane Austen's novel Sense and Sensibility (1811) was adapted into a 1995 film by Emma Thompson, for which she received general acclaim as well as the 1996 Academy Award.
Like all of Jane Austen's novels, Sense and Sensibility is as much a commentary on 18th Century society as a romance.
The film captures the plight of genteel ladies "of no fortune" during that period.

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen: A searchable online version at The Literature Network
Though not the first novel she wrote, Sense and Sensibility was the first Jane Austen published.
Though she initially called it Elinor and Marianne, Austen jettisoned both the title and the epistolary mode in which it was originally written, but kept the essential theme: the necessity of finding a workable middle ground between passion and reason.
Whereas the former is a sensible, rational creature, her younger sister is wildly romantic--a characteristic that offers Austen plenty of scope for both satire and compassion.

 Sense and Sensibility
Marianne Dashwood, trusting the evidence of her senses, falls passionately in love with a man who in truth is less good than he seems.
Sense and Sensibility, published in 1811, is considerably more ambitious than Northanger Abbey, both thematically and technically, and is generally considered Austen's first major novel.
Her revised version of Elinor and Marianne – Sense and Sensibility – was published, like all the work that appeared in print in her lifetime, anonymously, in 1811; and between the time Pride and Prejudice was accepted for publication and the time it actually appeared, she wrote Mansfield Park.

 Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility
In an age that extolled the virtues of expressing emotion and being sensible to the beauty of nature and literature, Jane Austen wrote a novel to champion sense and moderation.
Throughout the novel, sensibility is mocked whereas sense (not a cold reason, but a moderate practicality) is praised.
By the end of the novel, sense triumphs as the emotional Marianne, "[i]nstead of falling sacrifice to an irresistible passion," makes a practical match based not on volatile emotions, but on the steadier, quieter feelings of respect and friendship, trusting that, in time, these too can grow into love (372).

Dashwood's situation, with only common feelings, must have been highly unpleasing;-- but in HER mind there was a sense of honor so keen, a generosity so romantic, that any offence of the kind, by whomsoever given or received, was to her a source of immoveable disgust.
She was sensible and clever; but eager in everything: her sorrows, her joys, could have no moderation.

Austen, Jane: Sense and Sensibility   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Austen clearly shows how Marianne's sensibility repeatedly makes her ill. This exaggerated sensibility signals the sometimes melodramatic worldview of adolescence--"her sorrows, her joys, could have no moderation" (6)--which Elinor terms "romantic" (49) and tries to moderate, in accordance with early-nineteenth-century disapproval of the teary sentimentality of the previous century.
In fact, it is Elinor's "sense," which Marianne mistakenly terms "cold-hearted" (18), that approximates the older meaning of eighteenth-century sensibility in an openness to others' troubles, not a focus on one's own emotions.
Lack of sensibility altogether is not, however, a virtue; Austen condemns her least likable characters as "reserved, cold" (26) and insensible to others as subjects.

A Calendar for Sense and Sensibility
The argument of the paper is that the extant calendar of the 1811 Sense and Sensibility reveals an underlying set of features typical of epistolary novels which it is improbable Austen would have gone to the difficult trouble of erecting had it not been that the original calendar was made for an epistolary novel.
Sense and Sensibility is grounded in a chronology which is internally consistent for 37 years.
In the case of Sense and Sensibility, it is only in the second and then increasingly in the third volume of the novel that events are attached to cited months, dates, or days of the week.

Each editor, both of whom are university professors, has an exciting perspective on the novel as evidenced by their introductions as well as by their choice of contextual and critical inclusions.
In her brief but lively introduction, Johnson calls Sense and Sensibility a “dark and disenchanted novel” (xiv) and says that even though its roots are in Austen’s earliest work it is a mature undertaking because the author has successfully shifted from parody to social criticism.
Indicating that Marianne may be a stellar example of codependency, Johnson posits that her “intensity … obsessiveness … and dependency on Willoughby” is a “sort of raw and helpless need.” Johnson agrees that neither sister should be held up as a paragon, because each is equally plagued by problems of knowing and discerning.

Phenomena such as memory, the association of ideas in the mind, the causes of emotions and the individual's sense of self, became of central importance to speculative thinkers and writers of narrative literature alike.

Sense and Sensibility was the author's first published work and, as is often the case with early writing efforts, displays an undeniable shallowness: themes are half-developed, characterization is uneven, and plotting follows a predictable straight-forwardness.
Austen's later books, including Persuasion, which was developed into a wonderfully sumptuous film earlier this year, and Emma, which received unusual treatment in Clueless, plumb the human soul far more deeply, creating characters and situations of greater versatility and vitality.
The novel's flaws guarantee that Sense and Sensibility cannot be a perfect motion picture, but it would be difficult, I think, to do much better with the material than Emma Thompson and director Ang Lee (Eat Drink Man Woman) have here.
