Sensei would often mention that he and his wife Sata had spent 23 years serving O-Sensei and his wife Hata and that he would continue to serve the founder and propagate his techniques until he breathed his last.
Sensei was conscious of the criticism that "Iwama Aikido" was overly concerned with basics and too static in the execution of techniques.
Sensei told me that the reason for the difference was that O-Sensei was conscious of being filmed in public and would purposely not demonstrate techniques in the same way he would teach in Iwama.

Sensei - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Japanese expression sensei derives from but is not semantically identical to the Chinese word xiansheng, which is written with the same characters.
Japanese speakers are particularly sensitive to this usage when it concerns members of an in-group who spontaneously associate or identify sensei with a particular person—many if not most Japanese speakers readily see this usage as indicative of adherents speaking of a charismatic spiritual or cult leader.
In speech, a sarcastic sensei is intoned for emphasis, whereas in print it is rendered in katakana, akin to scare quotes or italics in English.

Most martial artists also consider a sensei to be a life-long guide who provides students with physical, mental and even sometimes spiritual training.
Students move, Judo clubs close, sensei retire, and it is hard to find an instructor that can provide you with such lessons for a long time.
Over the years I have seen how wonderful Judo is from the perspective of a kid and an adult, a beginner, an intermediate student, a tournament competitor, a tournament official, a new teacher, a club head instructor, and an international team coach.

 The Sensei
A sensei therefore is someone who has been "born before" you in the system you are studying and is therefore senior to you, or in Shakespearian terms your "better." This is not the same as the western idea of a coach.
A sensei can actually do what he teaches, he or she embodies the art, while a coach can teach you how to do something without necessarily being able to perform the skill him or herself.
The sensei's role is therefore vital and transcends the teaching of mere technique, which is actually the province of the coach.
