Sensibility - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sensibility refers to an acute perception of or responsiveness toward something, such as the emotions of another.
Originating in philosophical and scientific writings, Sensibility became an English-language literary movement, particularly in the then-new genre of the novel.
Also, in the last decades of the eighteenth century, anti-Sensibility thinkers often associated the emotional volatility of Sensibility with the exuberant violence of the French Revolution, and in response to fears of revolution coming to Britain, Sensible figures were coded as anti-patriotic or even politically subversive.

 Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility
In an age that extolled the virtues of expressing emotion and being sensible to the beauty of nature and literature, Jane Austen wrote a novel to champion sense and moderation.
Throughout the novel, sensibility is mocked whereas sense (not a cold reason, but a moderate practicality) is praised.
Brandon is lauded for being "sensible" and "gentlemanlike" and for his generosity to Edward (32).

 on Sense and Sensibility
Just as it was (probably) the first she wrote in draft form, then, it was the first she saw published; she paid to have it published anonymously in Nov. 1811; this novel, by an unknown and unidentified author, sold 1000 copies by July 3rd, 1812, and she earned 140 pounds from those sales.
One sees such beliefs in some action in major 18th-century "novels of sensibility," in which both men and women of great sensibility are to a great extent too finely formed to function in the world.
In the 18th century, having "sense" or even being "sensible" would of necessity require sensitivity to nerves and the physical (and moral) senses, but it would mean controlling one's emotions, rather than indulging them, allowing rationality reins over emotions, even if reliant on emotions in the first place.

Sensation and Sensibility: Viewing Gainsborough's Cottage Door
Sensibility celebrated the artless beauty of nature and idealized the life of the countryside and the rural peasantry.
Sensibility had as its central tenet the intersection of new models of vision and visual perception.
Focusing on the “viewing apparatuses” exhibited in “Sensation and Sensibility” we will view the theatrical effects of Gainsborough’s works as children explore 18th century methods of experimenting with light, color and motion in their own creations.

Each editor, both of whom are university professors, has an exciting perspective on the novel as evidenced by their introductions as well as by their choice of contextual and critical inclusions.
In her brief but lively introduction, Johnson calls Sense and Sensibility a “dark and disenchanted novel” (xiv) and says that even though its roots are in Austen’s earliest work it is a mature undertaking because the author has successfully shifted from parody to social criticism.
Indicating that Marianne may be a stellar example of codependency, Johnson posits that her “intensity … obsessiveness … and dependency on Willoughby” is a “sort of raw and helpless need.” Johnson agrees that neither sister should be held up as a paragon, because each is equally plagued by problems of knowing and discerning.

Sense and Sensibility Summary & Essays - Jane Austen
Sense and Sensibility was first published in 1811, sixteen years after Jane Austen began the first draft, titled "Elinor and Marianne." Financed by Austen's brother and attributed only to "A Lady," it was the first of her novels to be put into print.
The eldest sister, Elinor, exemplifies the sense of the title—she is portrayed as a paragon of common sense and diplomatic behavior—while her younger sister Marianne personifies sensibility in her complete abandonment to passion and her utter lack of emotional control.
Although rich in character development and wit, Sense and Sensibility is viewed as one of Austen's lesser works because of this formulaic approach, which Austen abandons in her more mature novels.

Sense and Sensibility Movie Review at Hollywood Video
In fairly short succession, Austen aficionados were treated to Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility, a television miniseries of Pride and Prejudice, and two versions of Emma (one being Clueless, an extremely clever adaptation set in the modern era).
Sense and Sensibility as a novel is one of Austen's lesser efforts.
Lee also provides interesting insight into the way he shoots scenes and actually describes shots with Winslet as "sensibility scenes" and shots with Thompson as "sense shots," referring to the symbolic representations of their respective characters.

Filmtracks: Sense and Sensibility (Patrick Doyle)
For detractors of the kind of ridiculous structure of society resurrected in these Austen tales, Sense and Sensibility is an insipid bore, with the sort of mindbogglingly trivial romance of the era that indeed nearly ruins the larger, overarching themes of the maturing process that the film also displays.
To write off the score for Sense and Sensibility as an exercise in pure fluff wouldn't be an injustice for many listeners (and perhaps even some Doyle collectors), but the composer accomplishes all that he needed to do.
The romance and interminable conversations in the film beg this kind of basic string, woodwind, and piano writing, and while the charm shines through in the end, Doyle is careful to present his music with just enough solemn pace of restraint to serve the hardships of the women in the film.

Whereas the former is a sensible, rational creature, her younger sister is wildly romantic--a characteristic that offers Austen plenty of scope for both satire and compassion.
My favorite of all Jane Austen's books is Sense and Sensibility, perhaps because there is none of that parodied silliness in the major characters (which is the case for Mrs Bennet in Pride and Prejudice and for Mrs Norris in Mansfield Park).
The characters in Sense and Sensibility are therefore more true to life; we weep with them and we feel their anguish.

Her first novel, Sense and Sensibility, adapted into the present film, was published in 1811, just six years before her untimely death.
This Austen novel is generally conceded to be the least masterful of the six, but what it lacks in complexity of plot, character portrayals, and development of themes, it makes up for by the freshness of its central ideas and the beauty of its basic premise.

Jane Austen was a complete and most sensible lady, but a very incomplete, and rather insensible (not senseless) woman." Anthony Trollope made up his mind as a young man that "Pride and Prejudice was the best novel in the language," while Mark Twain claimed to feel an "animal repugnance" for Austen's writing.

It's a delight to watch, and the screenplay itself is wonderfully done, combining the sensible and likeable characters with the truly absurd characters, not to mention those whose characters are morally enfeebled.
Emma Thompson is a wonderful actress, but I find it impossible to think of her as Elinor, both on account of her being visibly too much older than the nineteen of Miss Dashwood in the novel, and also in her portrayal somehow seeming rather too ruefully pragmatic.

This novel contrasts two sisters: Marianne, who, with her doctrines of love at first sight, fervent emotions overtly expressed, and admiration of the grotesque "picturesque", represents the cult of "sensibility"; and Elinor, who has much more "sense", but is still not immune from disappointments.
This is an exuberant parody (in epistolary form) of the cult of sensibility, which she later criticized in a more serious way in her novel

 Syllabus: Sensibility and Its Discontents
Put generally, we will explore what literary historians traditionally have called the Age of Sensibility, a movement (approximately 1740-1840) that dovetails with Romanticism and extends even into early Victorian writing.
Because it claimed to explain human behavior, pleasure, and motivation, sensibility figured centrally in the political, religious, philosophical, and psychological debates of these years.
