Sensory deprivation tanks defined by Samadhi Tank Co. Inc.
In the 1950s, several research projects were started that were called "sensory deprivation." In our experience in the tank ("physical isolation"), there has been no psychological state that can be termed "sensory deprivation." In the absence of sensory input (and physical output), we have found no "deprived" states except those created by Self-metaprogramming.
Apparently the term "sensory deprivation" was invented by those psychologists who did not do self-investigation and who did experiments on subjects, expecting a "deprivation state" in the isolated circumstances.

Centre for the Study of Human Rights - sensory deprivation installation
In this way, she hoped to produce a new kind of sensory deprivation procedure which would simultaneously deprive and overload the senses by virtue of spatial arrangements, film, sound and light.
These tests paved the way for governmental use of sensory deprivation techniques as a means of interrogation, as seen, for example, with the internment of IRA suspects by the British forces.
Secondly, research into sensory deprivation techniques conducted by Harvard Medical School found that “social cue factors” such as the presence of doctors, panic buttons, trays of medication and the like induced a belief that something bad was occurring or was likely to occur.

Sensory deprivation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sensory deprivation is the deliberate reduction or removal of stimuli from one or more of the senses.
Sensory deprivation has been used in various alternative medicines and in psychological experiments (e.g., see Isolation tank), and for torture or punishment.
In the television series Alias starring Jennifer Garner sensory deprivation was used on CIA agent Sydney Bristow by The Covenant in order for them to brainwash her into thinking she was someone she was not.

Sensory Deprivation Affects Brain’s Nerve Connections
When the sensory deprivation continued for two months, however, spine loss was slightly reduced in adult animals as well.
The scientists therefore found that the period of young adolescence to adulthood was particularly susceptible to sensory deprivation.
Interestingly, in adolescent mice the effects of sensory deprivation on spine loss could be largely reversed if whiskers were allowed to re-grow during a subsequent recovery period, says Dr. Gan.

Sensory deprivation experiments of the 1950s have shown that human beings need environmental stimulation to function normally.
Thus, appropriate degrees of sensory deprivation may actually have a therapeutic effect when arousal levels are too high.
A form of sensory deprivation known as REST (restricted environmental stimulation), which consists of floating for several hours in a dark, soundproof tank of water heated to body temperature, has been used to treat drug and smoking addictions, lower back pain, and other conditions associated with excessive stress.

Birth & the Origins of Violence: One Persepective
It is of historical significance that both Harry Harlow (1964) and Rene Spitz (1965) denied that maternal-social deprivation involved sensory deprivation and prior to my reformulation of this issue no one had suspected that the abnormal emotional-social behaviors observed in the isolation reared or maternal-socially deprived monkeys was due to abnormal brain development and function.
Sensory deprivation in the other sensory systems (vision, hearing, smell and taste) do not result in the maternal-social deprivation or SAD syndrome).
My reconceptualization of the maternal-social deprivation syndrome which involved cerebellar-limbic-frontal lobe brain functions was made possible by the pioneering studies of Mason (1968) and Mason and Berkson (1975) who demonstrated that the isolation rearing of infant monkeys on a "swinging mother" surrogate (vestibular-cerebellar stimulation) prevented the development of the classic maternal-social (SAD) syndrome.

In the Charles Bonnet syndrome, the sensory starvation that set the stage for the hallucinations was accidental --the result of a naturally occurring vision impairment.
One study of intentional sensory starvation was done in the mid-1950's at McGill University (Heron 1957).
Schultz and Melzack (1993) proposed a single explanation for hallucinations that are experienced by volunteers in sensory deprivation experiments and for hallucinations experienced by people with damaged sensory systems (as in Charles Bonnet syndrome).

In addition, (6) prisoners were deprived of sleep for days on end; while not technically SD this accentuates the process.
Measures (1), (2), (3) and (5) cause visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile deprivation while measures (4) and (6) deprive the brain of oxygen and sugar necessary for normal functioning.

Sensory deprivation reduces new cell size in the olfactory system
Sensory deprivation causes changes in new cell size and excitability in the olfactory system, which governs the ability to smell, according to a study in Neuron by a Yale School of Medicine researcher.
They closed one nostril in mice, a common sensory deprivation procedure, and then observed how the olfactory system adjusted to the change in sensory input.
When deprived of sensory input, there was a reduction in the size of the new interneurons, but this was compensated by an increase in their excitability.

Scientists estimate that up to 90% of the brain's normal workload is caused by the effects of routine environmental stimulation the combined effects of gravity, temperature, touch, light and sound on the muscles, nervous system and sense organs of the body.
Although your body enters a level of physical relaxation which is even deeper than sleep, in the tank your mind remains awake and dreamily alert, just above the threshold of sleep Large areas of the brain are suddenly liberated from their normal workload of processing signals from the nervous system and sense organs.
All the effects of deep sensory relaxation are wholly beneficial and work simultaneously at a physical, mental and emotional level.

The bright side of such studies on sensory deprivation is that they teach us that the adverse effects of deprivation can be reversed if the deprivation is stopped and the brain properly stimulated.
For example, the cerebral palsy child whose body is restricted by braces and a wheelchair is deprived of some of his most needed forms of stimulation, that which comes from uninhibited movement providing the brain with tactile, vestibular, and proprioceptive feedback stimulation from the body extremities, the muscles, and the joints.
Adult head injury patients and stroke patients are also frequently subjected to the same restrictive environment depriving their brains of desperately needed stimulation.

We show that in young adolescent mice, long-term sensory deprivation through whisker trimming prevents net spine loss by preferentially reducing the rate of ongoing spine elimination, not by increasing the rate of spine formation.
This effect of deprivation diminishes as animals mature but still persists in adulthood.
Similar to sensory manipulation, the rate of spine elimination decreases after chronic blockade of NMDA (N-methyl-d-aspartate) receptors with the antagonist MK801, and accelerates after drug withdrawal.

Isolated burned people are likely to suffer from mild disorientation, confusion, illusions, or hallucinations caused by the shock of extremely threatening events and sensory deprivation.
In the burn unit, patients are isolated from their customary reality as they confined to a room, far from their normal physical reference points.
It has been observed that such persons, when deprived of their habitual daily references, develop a severe symptomatology with signs of temporal disorientation followed, as the period of isolation persists, by mild hallucinations, hallucinatory sensations, delirious ideation, and/or structural delirium.
