Returning to this sentence, we feel that the analysis of farmer and duckling are practically irrelevant to an understanding of its content and entirely irrelevant to a feeling for the structure of the sentence as a whole.
The sentence is the outgrowth of historical and of unreasoning psychological forces rather than of a logical synthesis of elements that have been clearly grasped in their individuality.
The sentence reads then, “The (fem.)-woman she (fem.)-it (neut.)-it (masc.)-on-put the (neut.)-sand the (masc.)-table.” If “sand” is qualified as “much” and “table” as “large,” these new ideas are expressed as abstract nouns, each with its inherent class-prefix (“much” is neuter or feminine, “large” is masculine) and with a possessive prefix referring to the qualified noun.

Both courts based their conclusion on the fact that the sixty-year sentence was the mandatory minimum sentence under the statute, reasoning that courts are not authorized to conduct proportionality reviews of legislatively mandated penalties, particularly when the penalty imposed is the minimum under the statute.
The trial court sentenced Close under the crime of violence statute to cumulative minimum sentences totaling sixty years of imprisonment: Close was sentenced to five years for each of the six counts of second-degree assault, to run consecutively under the crime of violence statute, for a total of thirty years for the assault convictions.
Close was also sentenced to ten years for each of the three counts of aggravated robbery, to run consecutively under the crime of violence statute, for a total of thirty years for the aggravated robbery convictions.

No. 01-7574: Sattazahn v. Pennsylvania - Amicus (Merits)
Petitioner's life sentence cannot be analogized to an "acquittal," because neither the jury nor the trial court determined that the circumstances of his offense fail to warrant a sentence of death.
Because that verdict resulted from "a capital sentencing procedure that resembles a trial on the issue of guilt or innocence," the jury effectively had "acquitted the defendant of whatever was necessary to impose the death sentence." Id. at 444-445 (citation omitted).
In that case, the jury was deadlocked on whether to convict the defendant, and the trial court, after discharging the jury, granted the defendant's motion for a judgment of acquittal.

Aghajari's death sentence will be final if he refuses to appeal
Academic Hashem Aghajari was sentenced to death by a court in the western Iranian city of Hamedan on November 6 for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
Aghajari, the lawyer added, had earlier said the reason he refused to appeal was that if the sentence is really constitutional and complies with the Islamic Sharia, it must be executed; otherwise, the judiciary officials, themselves, must move to solve the issue.
The death sentence drew sharp and angry criticism in Iran, with students staging several days of rally to call on the Judiciary to suspend the ruling.

The U.S. Supreme Court granted California prosecutors' request Monday to review a San Joaquin County death sentence and decide whether standard jury instructions had prevented jurors from considering the defendant's good behavior behind bars as a reason to spare his life.
The court took up the case of Fernando Belmontes after a federal appeals court in San Francisco ruled in July, for a second time, that the judge's instructions at Belmontes' trial had probably kept jurors from taking into account the main evidence that defense attorneys offered in support of a life sentence.
The Supreme Court will hear the case in the term that starts in October, with a ruling due by June 2007.
