Tank - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
Tanks are also at a disadvantage in wooded terrain and urban environments, which cancel the advantages of the tank's long-range firepower, limit the crew's ability to detect potential threats, and can even limit the turret's ability to traverse.
Tanks were first used in the First World War to break the deadlock of the trenches, and they evolved gradually to assume the role of cavalry on the battlefield.
Since an immobilised tank is an easy target for mortars, artillery, and the specialised tank hunting units of the enemy forces, speed is normally kept to a minimum, and every opportunity is used to move tanks on wheeled tank transporters and by railway instead of under their own power.

Tank - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tanks were first used in World War I to break the deadlock of the trenches, and they evolved gradually to assume the former role of cavalry on the battlefield: to either flank opposing positions with fast movement, or to penetrate defences by massive concentration.
While tanks are expensive to operate and support, they remain among the most formidable and versatile weapons of the modern battlefield, both for their ability to engage other ground targets (including fortifications) and their shock value against infantry.
Tanks are also at a disadvantage in wooded terrain and urban combat environments, which cancel the advantages of the tank's long-range firepower, limit the crew's ability to detect potential threats, and can even limit the turret's ability to traverse.

 The Sentinel
By this time the problems with the manufacture of the AC I gear box had been solved and the first cast hull had been completed in October 1941 which was a great achievement as nothing this complicated had been attempted by Australian industry before.
The AC I was ahead of it'sBritish counter parts in that it was designed to be able to be up gunned from the 2 pounder to the 6 pounder when it became available how ever this gun was needed in the middle east so none were allotted to the AC I project.
The 25 pounder was intended to be placed in the improved Sentinel to be given the title AC III which also incorporated a smooth glassis plate dispensing with the hull mounted machine gun and gunner.

 Sentinel Details
Sentinel was produced in limited numbers in few slightly different variants: Sentinel I and II with 40mm gun Sentinel III with 87.6mm howitzer Sentinel IIIa and Sentinel IV with 76.2mm gun.
This made the hull extra tough, seamless (a problem with the French SOMUA tank), and less prone to flexing and loosening of plates as in riveted or bolted hulls.
Two in the Australian armour museum Pucapunyal, one at the Melbourne tank museum, and the one you have is the one at Bovington dorset England, the only one I know of outside Australia.

 Armour in Focus: AC1 Sentinel
Due to the shortage of armour plate and the capability to produce rolled plate it was decided to use a number of castings bolted together in a similar manner to that used on the British Matilda.
The Sentinel was not without its design problems, the electric turret traverse ceased to function if the vehicle was on an incline and the cooling system was found to be inadequate.
Unlike the British tanks of the time the basic design of Sentinel proved to be capable of being successfully up-gunned and in 1943 the AC3 prototype was produced which mounted the British 25 pdr.

GCM September 1997 - Research - Mixing fungicides controls disease on bentgrass greens
DMI-chlorothalonil tank mixes are generally effective against several important diseases of creeping bentgrass greens during summer, but the tank mixes described here control only certain foliar and crown diseases.
As noted for dollar spot and anthracnose, the tank mix sometimes outperforms the DMI alone against brown patch, even when the DMI was used at twice the rate as in the tank mix (14).
Here's another example: Our data with a tank mix of iprodione and DMI fungicides are limited to a single test, but we found it performed similarly to a DMI-chlorothalonil tank mix against dollar spot, brown patch and anthracnose (11).

Australia's 1st and only locally produced MBT - Military Photos   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The Army needed a tank capable of a top speed of 56km/h (35 miles per hour) with a range of 240 km (150 miles), armaments consisting of a 2 pounder anti tank gun and a Vickers machine gun, a crew of 4, and armoured to provide protection equivalent to 50mm (2 inch) of armour plate.
Despite the two part ammunition and the cramped turret the rate of fire showed that the tank was far from unusable, in tests with the commander assisting the loader by ramming the projectile the crew were able to fire 8 rounds in 73 seconds.
Hull design was similar to the AC3’s with the drivers door moved to the side of the hull, the engine bulkhead shifted to the rear slightly, the air intake located across the top of the hull behind the turret removed and the air vents on the side of the fighting compartment enlarged to compensate.

Steve Jackson Games Forums - Sentinel cruiser tank [Australia]
Originally, the tank was to be based on the American M-3 medium (p.W:MP68), but several problems prevented this, one being that the facilities to created rolled steel armor were occupied.
This led to one of the more unusual features of the tank in that the hull and turret were each cast in one piece.
The first 13 tanks didn’t have their armor properly treated and were designated for training only.

SPACE.com -- Shuttle's Foam Crack Could Delay Launch
A piece of tank foam insulation reportedly found on Discovery's launch pad appears to have come from the same region as the cracked area on the shuttle's fuel tank according images found by the Orlando Sentinel, Florida Today and combined by collectSPACE.com.
LaNasa said the external tank's liquid oxygen feedline is designed to flex during the fuel loading before a launch and unloading after a scrub.
Shuttle fuel tank foam has been one of NASA's greatest concerns since the 2003 Columbia tragedy, in which a 1.67-pound chunk of foam insulation fell from a bipod ramp and breached the orbiter's left wing leading edge.

Sentinel tank - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sentinel tank was designed in Australia in World War II in response to the war in Europe, and to the threat of Japan expanding the war to the Pacific or even a possible Japanese invasion of Australia.
The few Sentinels that were built never saw action as Australia's Armoured Divisions had been equipped by that time with British and American tanks.
In an effort to further improve the firepower of the Australian produced tanks a turret was developed and mounted on one of the earlier development vehicles to assess the vehicle's ability to mount the foremost Allied anti-tank gun of the day - the British 17 pounder.

Ortech Engineering Tank Sentinel System   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The heart of the Tank Sentinel System is a Tank Gauging Object (TGO) which is implemented in a consistent manner with all other Lookout objects.
The TGO allows a complete storage tank to be defined in a matter of minutes by combining all of the common data parameters associated with tank gauging (level, temperature, gross volume, net volume, etc.) into a single object.
The Tank Sentinel has the ability to monitor and/or control the valves and pumps in a tank farm via an OEI TRIACS network or a wide variety of other digital I/O devices such as PLCs and RTUs.

Sentinel will be reasonably well-known to Australian readers and maybe to others but for those who do not know about it, the Australian Cruiser Mark 1 was a medium tank designed and built in Australia during WW2.
Home production was necessary due to supplies from the United Kingdom or United States being uncertain when the design was proposed, though in the end it did not see action as tanks were brought in from abroad.
For a vehicle produced from scratch it was a good achievement.
