The public was invited to suggest names for the island and "Sentosa" – meaning peace and tranquillity in Malay - was eventually chosen for the island resort.
Tasked with overseeing the development, management and promotion of the island, Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) was incorporated on 1 September 1972 as a statutory board under the purview of the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
Sentosa has a 3.2-kilometre stretch of white sand beach, and is the only location in Singapore to offer beachfront accommodation and over 670 hotel rooms with full facilities.

Its a small island that is connected to the main city via a bus service that goes by a small bridge.
Its free and the moment you set foot in sentosa, buy a small ticket which entitles you to roam around in sentosa at your free will, and ride the free yellow buses to take you from one place to another.
sentosa is one superb place - but dont go in a hurry and take a lot of money along, atleast $200 as it is expensive and food at sentosa is also very costly since it is a tourist destination.
